Windows 7 Saying Not Genuine Suddenly

Question
-
I purchased the software several months after it came out through Digitalriver. I have had no problems with the software before. Now it suddenly shows black desktop with message that it isn't genuine. I ran the web scanner and it says it is not genuine. I have checked for malware and keep antivirus software up to date. Any resolutions to this?
Update: posted diagnostic tool scan also no hardware has been changed.

Try these steps in order as needed.
1. Use System Restore to recover to a point before the error appeared.
2. Use the System File Checker to repair any corrupted system files. Click Start, type 'cmd' in the Search/Run box, and right click on the CMD icon at the top of the results pane. Select Run as Administrator. When the cmd window opens type 'sfc /scannow' at the prompt and hit Enter. When the scan completes close the cmd window.
3. Use your retail disk to perform an in-place installation (aka repair installation). This will not disturb your programs, files, or settings, but make a backup first anyway. You will need to catch up on updates again but it should fix the problem.

Hopefully, the problem highlighted above is simply because of a corrupted Licensing Store.....Recreate the Licensing Store
1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
reboot
Run MGADiag again, and post the report, together with details of any error messages encountered.

I didn't get any errors changing tokens.dat to tokens.bar. I rebooted the computer ran the MGADIAg but I get an error message trying to copy the information:
"Failed to create output files, hr = 0x80070002. Please contact support."

Try pasting the result anyway. The error is sometimes bogus.

All that error means is that for some reason the tool was unable to save the output files to disk - the data for the report is still in RAM and accessible for copy/paste procedures

No change, I'm afraid:(
What Anti-Virus are you using? - Some AV's have a setting to disable scripting (which is incredibly stupid since many legitimate/necessary things happen by scripts) The most well-known for this is Norton in its various forms. What anti-Malware apps do you have installed? What software did you install in the few days prior to the notification first appearing? Any signs of malware?

My anti virus program is Avast v.6.0.1203, I permanently disabled the program then restarted but still get the not genuine message.
I also have Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware but I don't think it is actually running just installed, then of course the windows spyware program. Avast upgraded probably two weeks ago but nothing happened up until a few days ago.
Could I not just set the permissions on slmgr.vbs?

Turning off programs individually is not the right approach. Use a selective startup and re-enable programs one by one to diagnose the issues. See:

I recently had the same problem with Win 7 saying it wasn't genuine. From reading another post, I found out that there is one Service that at first looks like no big deal to switch off but apparently is. If you switch the Service called SPP Notification Service to anything other than automatic, you get the "Not Genuine" message. If you make sure that it is running on automatic, then you shouldn't have any more problems with a truly "Genuine" install. Hope this helps.Sunday, December 11, 2011 8:08 AM
