vista windows update error 80070426 RRS feed

  • Question

  • During a routine visit to a res customer, this error appeared in the WU logs (multiple times).  The symptom is that WU will find appropriate updates to D/L, but the downloads hang and will not resume.  Via other forum recommendations, I'm posting the WGA results here.  BITs is started as is the WIn Update svc; Crypt svcs are started, but the following is noted: "started but failed to read description.  Error code 15100".

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Omar Sheikh,

While your original Windows Update issue is not something that is supported in the Windows Genuine Advantage Activation and Validation issue forums, your Diagnostic Report does show an issue that will (if it hasn't already) affect your Vista's Genuine status.

You will notice that under the "File Scan Data-->" line there are a large number of files that are listed as Mismatched. All those files listed, are Critical Vista System files. Normally, when there is one or two Mismatched files, it means that those files have been tampered or corrupted in some way. But in your case the Diagnostic Report is reporting that ALL your Critical Vista System files are Tampered or Corrupted. This is highly unlikely. Whats more likely is that your System Catalog has been tampered or corrupted. The System Catalog stores all the Signatures Hash (think fingerprint) for all the Critical Vista System (and other) files. One of the things that Vista uses the System Catalog for is to identify if a file has been tampered or corupted because if the file had been modified in any way, it's signature hash would not match what is listed in the System Catalog and in that case Vista would flag itself as Non-Genuine.

Your Vista, (very shortly, if not already), will flag itself as Non-Genuine, because of this issue. It may also cause Vista (and possibly other programs) to become unstable and/or not behave incorrectly (possibly the cause of your Windows Update issue). I highly recommend that you Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1. Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
    2. Go to Control Panel
    3. On the left hand side of the Control panel window, Click on "Classic View"
    4. Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"
    5. On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"
    6. Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days",

    7. Select "Choose Different Restore Point", select the restore point that corresponds to a date Before you first experianced an issue.
    8. Click the "Next" button.
    9. Reboot back into Normal mode
    10. Run the Diagnostic Tool again and paste the results into NotePad or Word doc and scroll down to the "File Scan Data-->" line.

11a)     If there are any Mismatched files listed, they you will need to restore to a point further in the past.
11b)     If there are No Mismatched files listed, then your Vista will report as Genuine and there is a chance that your Windows Update issue may also be resolved.

If your Windows Update issue is not resolved, I suggest going either to the Windows Update Solution Center at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527 or create a (No Cost) Windows Update support request at http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

    Thank you,
