Regarding the use of the backup restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • If a computer crashes and everything has to be reinstalled - do you first need to use the restore CDs for that computer, or can you use the WHS restore CD directly and restore all the backup files and expect the computer to be up and going again?

In theory, all you should need is the WHS restore CD.  However, in reality, due to the way some computer manufacturers create hidden restore partitions (in order to reset the PC to a just-out-of-the-box state), it doesn't always work.

  • First, forgive me Pierce007 for crashing your thread, but I have a simular question for Kariya21 or whomever else can help.

All of a sudden, Outlook 2003 has stopped working on a client PC.  I think that possibly the .pst file is corrupted.

Question:  1.  Should I be able to go into the backups and replace just that file?  If so, how do I do this?

                      2.  If it's been a couple days, would the backed up .pst file also be a backed corrupted file?

    Thanks,

  • Hi SilkRod,
first you may try to repair the PST file.
For this exists a tool named scanpst, for Outlook 2003 in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033.
(Because every restore of Outlook to an earlier version will definitively cause loss of all mails, which you received after the date of the restored file, unless you checked the option "Leave copy on server".)
Your Outlook PST file(s) will usually be found in folder %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook.
If it is nearly or exactly 2 GByte, it may still be in the Outlook 2000 format, which has this as hard coded maximum size.

If you open the backup of that client, you will find those files there (usually under C:\Documents and Settings\username).
You can simple copy them back, while Outlook is closed.

  • Thank you Olaf.  I am at work right now, but I will give it a try once I get home.  I'll let you know how it went.

One more question:  Say the problem is not the .pst file, but Outlook itself.  If I uninstall and then reinstall Outlook, will the .pst file remain intact on my computer?  Although, I guess (to be safe), I could just make a copy of the .pst file before I do the uninstall.

  • For help with Outlook and other Office components (which are, after all, not part of Windows Home Server and therefore off-topic here :) ) you might want to try Microsoft's Office news groups (especially the one for Outlook), the Microsoft support center, or even the Office web site.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

you can do some simple tests:
Rename the pst file and start Outlook. Or/and create a blank pst file and set it as replacement. Or use another user profile and try to use Outlook here.
Usually Outlook really hangs only due to problems with the PST file or some other Outlook related user resources in the profile folder, so a reinstall would not help.
As Ken pointed, for all other Outlook issues, try the resources linked by Ken.

I realize Outlook is not a part of WHS, but my initial thread question started about how to restore Outlook's .pst file from the WHS Backups.

  • Your first post, yes. Your segue ("One more question: ..."), not so much. :)
