Is everything ok? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a Sony Vaio laptop VPCEG28FN on 15-10-2011. It is written on the box that it contains Windows 7 Home premium, 64bit. I found out using command prompt that the OS installation date as 15-10-2011, the same date I bought it. I would like to know - If the OS was factory installed the date of OS installation would have been before the date of purchase as found on cmd prompt? Or the cmd prompt will show the date the OS was first used ie the date of purchase?

I don't have any problems in using my laptop. I download updates without any problems.

I want to know is everything ok with my OS and hope this operating system I have can be used lifelong. I ran a WGA  check and the report is this -  Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0):

The installation date is correct – Windows is installed when you open the machine for the first time and begin the setup – before that it exists only in an image on disk in a separate partition to the OS. This process is to ensure that the purchaser of the system has the ability to read, and the right to refuse, the Windows License terms.

There is one very small problem with your machine (highlighted)- which should be cleared by going to manual validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate  This will validate your install, thereby giving you more peace of mind.
Windows will also periodically re-validate the machine when online, to ensure that nothing untoward has happened to the operating system. This is probably due to the way the manufacturer set up the image in the first place, and not due to any problem on the machine

You may notice that  your Product Key above is different to the one quoted on your COA License sticker – this is quite normal, as the Key in your report is the OEM_SLP Key issued to the manufacturer, which self-activates when the proper licenses and certificates are present in both the software and hardware. The Key on the sticker is your own personal one, which can be used if the self-activation process breaks down for any reason. Should you need to use the COA Key, you would need to activate it by telephone.
