Accessing WHS data pool RRS feed

  • Question

  • I finally got the Connector Software working after numerous attempts. It was necessary for me to copy a folder from the server "Microsoft-Home Server Connector Software" to a jump drive and then run the setup.exe on my system. So far I've only connected one of my home PC to WHS but will connect the others shortly.

After connecting my Vista X64 system nothing just popped up and let me know that I had made a connection to the WHS - I was expecting something more apparent to let me know I had made the connection - Should I have seen something more obvious?

When I used either Windows Explorer or Xplorer2 I expected to see some connection but again no such luck. I then mapped a drive and I expected to map one drive letter to the WHS system but I was forced to pick a folder on the WHS and map to it. Did I do something wrong? I really don't like the idea of maping each folder on the WHS to a drive letter mainly because I'll run out of drive letters long before I run out of folders. Any suggestions?

I installed WHS on a system I had built, it boots off of an ATA drive and has two other ATA drives. Currently I have two SATA drives and a couple of USB drives for a pool of 2.2TB. I plan to add an 8 port SATA controller and then access another six internal SATA drives and use the remaining two to access two 5 port SATA hubs. This should give me access to almost all of my drives for storage. Later as time permits and I have the money I'll replace all of the small SATA drives (less than 1TB) with 1.5TB drives. However I need to first resolve the maping issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated.

  • If installing the connector reported success, and you have a small icon in your system tray now, then the installation of the connector worked. That's really

You can't map a single drive to the entire server. That's not the way Windows file sharing works I'm afraid. But there's no need to map a drive at all. You should be able to access any share on your server using the UNC pathname for the share: \\server\sharename for example.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken, I finally got it to work. Most of the problem was with the user (me). I'm able to access the data pool just by using \\server - this gets me access to all of the folders in the data pool.
