My Initial Problem:
I had to back up my data and reinstall Windows, yesterday. I downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers with the help of Dell Support. Everything seemed to be running smoothly until I opened a Word 2002 document and was prompted for a Product Key. I ran Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and the Product Key is being revealed as xxxxx-xxxxx-GD6GR-K6DP3-4C8MT.
The Results of Genuine Microsoft:

Hello darklyfunny,
Neither Dell nor Microsoft is going to replace what was lost, so let's go right to the other options.
Some ideas:
1. Troll internet auction sites for identical product or equivalent. Works is not nearly as popular/desirable/costly a product as Office so the likelihood of running into counterfeit copies is pretty small, and I would think the prices should be well below $50.
2. Consider buying a current edition of Word, if all you use is Word. It is sold as a standalone product. But be sure to compare the price of the standalone Word to Office Home and Student 2007 which is routinely offered on sale for less than $100. If you buy Office 2007 now from an authorized retailer you get Office 2010 for free when it comes out.
3. Get the beta of Office 2010 which will be good until October 2010. Not a real solution but lets you put off a decision until then. MS is rumored to be planning a free ad-supported "Lite" edition of Office that takes the place of Works, so using the Beta tides you over until we know if this rumor is true or not.
4. If your requirements are modest, consider online options like Googe Docs. Or consider using an open source Office product like Open Office.

Hello darklyfunny,
Your Dell OEM SLP license installation of XP Home Edition on your Dell Dimension 2400 computer is reporting as Genuine, so no worries there. The partial product key being reported is the standard Dell SLP deployment product key for XP Home, which is as expected and desired.
The mgadiag utility is reporting that your computer does not have an installation of Office or Office component programs (such as Word) that it is designed to look for, which are Office XP (aka Office 2002) and newer:
OGA Data-->
Office Status: 109 N/A <---This means no Office XP or newer is installed.
OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002
Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002
Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1So we have to go on the assumption that the computer has an installation of Office or Word 2000 or older, or that your installation of Word is part of one of the Works Suite editions that came with all of the Works programs plus Word.
Regardless of the above, in order to get Word to function, you are required to input the program's Product Key as requested. If the program was purchased in a retail package from a store, then the Product Key is going to be on a yellow-orange approx 1" x 3" label somewhere in the packaging, usually on the CD case. If the program came preinstalled on the computer from Dell, then the Prodcut Key is going to be printed on a Certificate of Authenticity (CoA) that is likely on a CD-sized piece of paper which came packaged with the rest of the discs that came with the computer.

For reasons unbeknown, I do not have the CD case with the Product Key. I can't find a Certificate of Authenticity either. My Microsoft Word came pre-installed on the computer, when I purchased it six years ago. What are my options to try and recover the Product Key at this point?
I did recover a Product Key off the side of my tower, but it didn't work. When the Service Pack 2 was downloaded, was a new Product key issued?

Hello darklyfunny,
It would help to know about your Word 2002...is it a standalone program, or part of Works, or part of Office? Is it installed on the computer?
If you just have the disc and cannot locate the CoA with the product key printed on it, then there is nothing that MS or Dell can do for you.
The product key on the CoA affixed to the computer is only for the Windows installed on the computer. It's not supposed to work with any other program.
Installing updates or service packs does not issue a new product key.

Word 2002 is part of Works Suite 2004.
Now, what about the Product Key listed on the tower? Why, if that's the Key, won't it work?Saturday, April 10, 2010 3:28 PM -
Hello darklyfunny,
It's the Product Key for Windows, not for Works Suite 2004 w/Word.
Assuming your Word/Works program came preinstalled on the computer when you bought it from Dell, the product key to activate your Word/Works is printed on a Certificate of Authenticity that came affixed to the cardboard CD folder that contained the Works/Word installation disc(s). Would look similar to this: http://juar.com/ta/Works9a.jpg

I don't have the cardboard CD folder nor the COA. How else can I obtain it?Saturday, April 10, 2010 4:09 PM
