Onecare 'disappeared' from laptop in my circle RRS feed

  • Question

  • Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista was happily running Onecare for months until connecting to new Bipond wireless modem when 'Onecare' disappeared from the laptop and now no antivirus progam seems to exist on it.
Onecare still appears in the list of installed programs, but no links or logo, and I cannot unistall it to enable re-installation,

By co-incidence (?) I cannot now 'unistall' other programs - nothing happens when clicking onto the 'unistall/repair' button...
By co-incidence (?) if deleting a file or emptying 'rubbish bin' the bin actually empties but the window saying it is emptying continues to run, only way to close it is to log off totally
By coincidence (?) computer will not now install any program from CD/DVD...

Any suggestions on how or why to fix the issues would be welcomed

  • The problems appear to be quite a bit deeper than just OneCare. And, since it appears to have begun with the installation of new hardware and the drivers/software for that device, I think it might be wise to use System Restore to return to before the new hardware was installed and see if all of the problems go away.
I hesitate to suggest running the OneCare cleanup tool to reinstall OneCare, since I believe you will continue to have many problems until you resolve whatever happened when you installed the Bigpond wireless modem.
You may want to start by contacting support for the wireless modem. Do you have the USB or PC Card version of the modem?
What installed with the device driver(s)?
You can also contact OneCare support, though I believe that they may refer you to Windows Support fairly quickly and that would not be free support.
Start with System Restore to go back to before the new modem was installed. You can always "undo" the System Restore and go back to where you are now.
