  • Hello jgcarry,

Sounds like you used the Utility supplied by Compaq to make the set of recovery discs---if so you get a Gold Star, because sooo many people don't do that and regret that later on! :-)

To answer your question, Yes, you use this set of discs to put Genuine Windows back onto your Compaq.  The discs will install Windows and all the software that was on the computer as it came from the factory 6 years ago.  A lot has happened since then, so be sure to uninstall the outdated versions of the software that cam with the computer and install the current stuff.

Find your product number on your Compaq, then go to that model's specific support pages, and look for links to guide you on using the recovery discs.

Go to this page:  http://www.compaq.com/cpq-country/cpq_support.html then click on the link "How do I find my product number".  Once you get your product number, enter it and click on "setup and install."

Once the install is complete - the first thing to do is to update your system to SP3 - I would recommend using the offline installer for this (you can download it on another machine while doing the install, and then copy to USB or CD)
    Then install an AV!!
Then get the 70-odd further updates for Windows from Windows Updates, and continue with the updates from the other HP programs and drivers.

  •     AWESOME:

Thank You, so very much for taking time to answer my question, and for the links. I was so worried about that,

so AGAIN thank you. Because this was my first computer, I read everything that came w/it before I even turned it on.

That was the first thing I did when I got it set up was to make those recovery disks...

I haven't taken out the old drive yet, because I was so unsure that I had the proper CD'S to install XP on the new drive.

Now that I feel somewhat confident in myself that I can do this, for that I'm very grateful.

Also I have Driver Cure will that help with the out dated software?

                                                                  Thanks

                                                                         Georgi  :)
