File Permission Only Owner Can Modify Or Delete. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to create a public folder where every one can create new files, or modify and delete only ther files. not others.

and only the administrator has the same rights as the file owner.

again, only the one the create the file can change or delete it. other can only read and execute. (and administrator has full access).

    Please Help.

  • Windows Home Server lets you grant read only, read write, or no access to shares on a share by share and user by user basis, but doesn't allow you to manage fine-grained access. So setting up the Windows equivalent of "chmod 755" is not going to be possible using the dashboard, and if you were to change the permissions using another tool, you would break core Windows Home Server functionality in the process.

In general, there's no direct equivalent to chmod in the Windows world; ACLs are a completely different security model as compared to Unix file security. You could achieve a (very rough) equivalent to "chmod 755" for a file via the following three commands run at a command prompt:

    • cacls [filename] /G [username]:F
    • cacls [filename] /E /G [groupname]:R
    • cacls [filename] /E /G Everyone:R

But (again) doing this will break core Windows Home Server functionality.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
