WHS 2011 and Office 365 domains RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a domain that I have assigned to WHS 2011 and would like to use the same domain for Office 365 registration but don't know how the two would behave trying to share the same domain. Has anybody tried this yet. I am concerned about breaking my "remote.domain.com" on the WHS if i give office 365 the same domain to manage

  • Hello,

When you have existing domamin and you need to move it to O365 you need to add your domain to Office 365.

you would create the DNS records that are required to route domain traffic to your Office 365 services, such as the DNS records that are required for routing inbound email to Microsoft Exchange Online.

  • Office 365 integration will be available for Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (there's supposed to be an add-in that helps with that, but I'm not sure of the current status, not being an SBS guru), but not for Windows Home Server. I don't believe it will be possible to share the domain without that integration.

  • By domain, I assume you mean the vanity URL for something like server.homeserver.com for access from the Internet? If so, as long as the ports Office 365 (I know nothing about this) uses are different to those required by WHS then there should not be a problem.

OK, just looked up what Office 365 is - looks to me as though it's hosted in the cloud not on a server on your network so once again I do not see a problem. What is Office 365 "registration"?

  • During Office 365 setup it asks if you want to use a Microsoft URL "myname.onmicrosoft.com" or use an existing domain "myname.com" My WHS box is using "remote.myname.com" so i wondered what would happen if i tried to give Office 365 control over "myname.com"

Sounds like Ken may be right. I'll try an Office 365 forum if i can find one.

  • I've just completed setting up Office365 for one of my domains. It requires you to create/edit the DNS records for your domain. If you want to use Exchange Online (which you will)  it only requires a TXT record for verifying you own the domain, a CNAME record added, and the MX record changed to point to the Office365 exchange server. I can't see how any of these DNS changes would impact WHS use of your domain. The only aspect of control Office365 has is email.

The other main services of Office 365 are Sharepoint Online & Lync Online, both require further changes to DNS records. I'm not certain how these would impact WHS, although you can choose whether to enable them or not.

For the record I'm using the microsoft supplied domain for my WHS2011.

I assume that's the xxxx.homeserver.com vanity URL, and it's not the domain for which you configured O365 Exchange?

  • Ken,

I think this is what I will do.

Change WHS2011 to use the xxxx.homeserver.com that I got for WHS1

Then setup O365 including Lync and Sharepoint to use the domain I own.

Just for the experience I will see what happens to WHS 2011 before changing it to xxxx.homeserver.com

  • Breaking things is fun if you know how to fix them!!!!!!

I'll let you know what breaks, if anything.

If they don't play nice together maybe I'll try SBS 2011 essentials.

  • Thanks for the link, that looks very helpful.

From the sounds of it it won't throw off my settings for WHS

  • OK,

finally got O365 all configured with my custom domain name. Only because I was using GoDaddy and all the documentation is for that provider.

Now to see if I can still get remote.myname.com to connect

  • Part of Office365 setup requires you to change the nameservers for your custom domain, that was the end of being able to use remote.myname.com.

Haven't tried noodling around in WHS yet to see if i can still get it to work. I may change to SBS 2011 essentials yet!
