Windows 7 NOT Genuine after moving to a new HD RRS feed

  • I recently had my laptop report that my hard drive was failing.  I backed up with Acronis, purchased a new drive and restored.  I had to use my Windows 7 boot CD to get the new drive to boot.  After a few days I started getting a Windows 7 is not Genuine message.  Windows "Repair" reports that nothing needs repair.  Here is the WGA Diagnostic Report:

    This problem is an unfortunately common one, and seems to often happen after a restore from an image – it probably means that there was a problem with the way the restore was done (or with the image in the first place)
    We have not been able to fix it in these forums other than by doing a repair install of the OS.
    Unfortunately, such a repair install can only be done using a Retail disk for the appropriate operating system (in your case either the RTM or an SP1 disk).
     
    Having said that, it MAY be possible that installing SP1 will fix the problem (using the full install file) without the need for a full repair install.
    If that doesn’t work, then you can always uninstall SP1 and see if you can borrow a Retail disk from someone.

  • I got a retail disk and tried to re-install.  The process halted at the end and reported that Windows 7 was not compatible with my computer.  Of course it was for the first year and a half I owned it.

    Later I remembered that I had an upgrade license for Windows 7 Professional.  It loaded as an "Anytime Upgrade" just fine.  But after the second reboot, the WGA message that Windows is not Genuine message began again.

    I tried a re-install of the Windows 7 Professional retail disk and it also reported that my PC was not compatible with Windows 7 and install aborted. 

    Back to square one again.

    I am now working with Microsoft tech support folks - in the "I am an idiot" stage.
