¿Solicit a FREE Windows Genuine Advantage Kit? RRS feed

  • Question

I was almost not surprised when Genuine Advantage told me I wasn`t “Genuine”.

I currently have a computer that is basically a “*** box” as a replacement for my former HP computer that drowned.

    Yes, drowned.

I am currently living in Villahermosa, Tabasco in Mexico – the state that completely flooded last October.

My HP was at the repair shop – having a CD-R drive replaced – the shop was in the central business district.  The city went underwater and, thus, so did the shop – up to the third floor.  Bye-bye computer.

The owners had their employees cobble together a system for me from what was left of their inventory.  I was lucky – I got it before they closed up shop and moved out of state in February.  On the other hand, what they loaded was Spanish and I have struggled ever since (but better than nothing, right?)

I have been using it just fine – sans a lot of my non-Microsoft applications – but now I find out I can`t update anything Microsoft because – lo and behold the Genuine Advantage says it isn`t Genuine.

This was a reputable repair shop – I believe they had contracts with several multinationals here – so I doubt what I have is pirated.  But, I can`t substantiate anything nor reach the owners to resolve this because they are gone.

Nothing on the Microsoft site that I can find is helpful or leads me in a direction that can resolve my problem.

On their Spanish language page – where I am automatically directed because of my Mexico IP address – there is an option that says:

“Solicitar un Kit Windows Genuine Advantage gratuito”  ¿Sospecha que es víctima de la piratería de software? Microsoft proporciona una copia gratuita del kit del Programa de ventajas de Windows original para los clientes que decidan enviar la solicitud pertinente.

Which basically says “Solicit a Windows Genuine Advantage Free” – if you meet the right criteria.  Granted, I am saying that I don’t THINK what I have is pirated – but I was hoping that I might meet the criteria otherwise because I can`t exactly afford to replace all my lost applications right now.

I need to resolve this and I would LOVE to get my Microsoft products the XP/Pro AND Office/Pro (if the XP is “bad” the Office probably is too, sigh….)  “legal” and, oh PLEASE back into ENGLISH again.

Does ANYONE have a clue? (And, I can`t call 1-800 numbers from Mexico – they don`t work.)

    Thanks in advance,

    Liz P

  • Liz P,

We request all users initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool to try and identify the problem you may be experiencing.  Did you receive any error codes and/or statements whatsoever indicating a failed validation?  Please try validating windows by visiting the following location:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine next click on the "Validate Windows" button in the upper right corner.  What happens?  The genuine site can also provide you with valuable information so please take time and review the documents.  Another site for helping customers identify genuine vs. non-genuine software is located here:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/

Next please download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.  This would assist us immensely so we may analyze possible causes for a failed validation.  Next we will begin formulating a resolution for what may be causing the problem.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.

    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,
