product key RRS feed

  • Question

I have recentlt reformatted my sisters computer with my win xp disk , since she lost hers. She does have a genuine copy of win xp on her system and was recieving regular updates. The issue is i forgot to write her product key number down before i reformatted and now i dont know how to locate it and it is at the stage where you enter it . Could it be found in the cmos somewhere? Thanks , Leanne.

  • Leanne,

There should be a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker located on the computer. The product key will be located there. The product key will not be contained on the CMOS. Why type of system does your sister have laptop or desktop?  Is the system custom built or store purchased? If the computer is store purchased please contact the manufacturer's technicial support and request a recovery software media disc.

    Thank you
