I'm very tempted to lay this one at the door of McAfee.
If you're prepared for a test, please
1) download the MCPR tool from here and make sure that you know how to relicense it - also download a new installer for your licensed version
2) download the installer for MSE from here and save it to your desktop for installation later
3) Uninstall McAfee completely using the Programs & Features options
4) reboot, and run the MCPR tool to clear the dregs of McAfee out of the system
5) Reboot , and run an MGADiag report - save the results
6) run a repair on the Licensing Store....
Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each
net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)
CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe
After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case
Reboot and run a new MGADiag report - save the results
7) If the system now shows as being genuine, you have a choice to make - MSE or McAfee? If it's still non-genuine, with the same error, then you can reinstall McAfee without qualms :)
8) once you have a functional AV installed, post back with your results and another new MGADiag report

The common cause for these mismatches is a faulty Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver
Download and install the latest version from....
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730
you want this one: iata_enu.exe
reboot then run another MGADiag report and post the results.

Assuming the drivers install without error, then your problem could be a corrupted Catroot2 folder...
Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt
NET STOP CRYPTSVC
REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
NET START CRYPTSVConce complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report.
Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Hi,
Yes, the driver was installed correctly Noel. After running net stop and net start (both without problems)
I left the laptop about 1 and a half hour before restart.
Here is the result from MGADiag:

No change :(
Have you recently installed any new drivers?
Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.
SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.
Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Hi
?? > Have you recently installed any new drivers?
Nop, but I had a problem with A virus a some time ago ( police virus ).
Below is my original post, about windows update problems.
Someone suggested that I should make two post because this "original
windows" problem seems to be different. Not sure about that.
The chksdsk didn't showed any problems.
The SFC said that some files where damaged and couldn't
be repaired.
This is the link to the CBS file in dropbox. (Don't have live, don't want to). Thanks again for the effort!,
Fede.-

Hi,
I've been trying to make Windows Update to work since a while now. I've read a lot of posts, tried many solutions
but nothing seems to work. I've tried:
Independent package installation: gives same error number when trying to install.
I've tried this post commands: post. , That is restart all services manually. Won't work.
Fix it: won't work either.
Some details:
I have windows 7 home edition. Came with the computer. Since a while now I get a message
that my copy is not original, but couldn't resolve this problem because needs updates.
I have a McAfee antivirius. Original with license.
Some time ago now I was infected with a virus. The so called police virus.
I guess everythingn was messed up by the virus. Still I suppose, one should be able to
fix this and run WU.
I'll appreciate any help you can give me.

There's something very strange going on in the CBS log - there appears to be a weekly scan of a number of files, which ends in a replacement of one of the key Licensing files.
What is your current Anti-Virus? still McAfee? what other Anti-virus products have EVER been installed on this machine?
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)
Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file
Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

Hi again,
>What is your current Anti-Virus? still McAfee? what other Anti-virus products have EVER been installed on this machine?
Yes, still McAffee. With license.
After the infection I decided to install also Spybot search & destroy.
It is running currently, and has a resident process.
>>Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)
Done.
>>Run it -
Not so easy.
The CheckSUR didn't install at all. I've got a message saying "preparing installation" and then.....
voilá!!! it doesn't work and return the same error number that gives name
to this post: -----> 0xC8000426 !!!
What is this error?!?!??!
I couldn't find an error code table with this one in it.
Thanks again,
Fede.-

Hi,
First the good news: My windows is original "again".
I've reinstalled McAffee. No problems so far. Lets hope it continues this way.
Bad news: still cannot run windows update nor install it from scratch.
Since this was the trigger to all my posting, I feel like we won a battle but the
war is far from beeing at reach for us :)
I just wanted to say thanks for all the help you gave me.
I'll try to continue to solve the problem with windows update in the other post.
Thank you!!!
