Help Connecting and Disconnecting Network Shares RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an HP Mediasmart server I just purchased. I have 5 PC's on my home network.

I am having issues getting filesharing to work correctly on all the PC's.

I have a share called "savefiles" that has FULL access granted to the guest account. And I have the guest account feature turned on.

2 of the PC's, I have installed the WHS connector and they work fine. I can access all the shares.

My Dell Laptop (running WinXP home), I can just enter the guest share name (\\hpserver\savefiles) in an Windows explorer address and the share opens fine. I don't have to enter a USERID or PASSWORD. This Dell does not have the WHS connector setup. It is connected through a wireless adaptor to my network (WPA).

My 4th Laptop is a Samsung NC10 netbook running Windows XP home. It does not have the WHS connector installed, and is on my wireless network also. When I enter the same guest sharename (\\hpserver\savfiles) in an Explorer, I get a Windows dialog to enter USERID and PASSWORD. If I enter CANCEL, it gives me an error that the share cannot be accessed. If I browse My Network places, I can see the hpserver in the workgroup area. But no WHS shares. When I click the hpserver name, I get the same Windows dialog asking for USERID and PASSWORD. Additionally if I try to enter a USERID and PASSWORD that I have setup in WHS, that has full access to share, it just pops up the Windows USERID/PASSWORD box again, but doesn't access the share. The only way I can get it to work, is to enter the Administrator as the USERID and the administrator password.

Question # 1 - Since this is a WHS "guest share", why is it asking me for USERID and PASSWORD?

My 5th is a desktop PC, running Windows XP Pro. It is also on a wireless access point to my network. I had the same issue as the 4th Laptop above. So I entered the Administrator USERID and PASSWORD. Mapped the \\hpserver\savefiles share as the Y: drive. Then I clicked the "reconnect at logon" box. I am able to access every share on the WHS, even after I reboot this desktop. Since this is one of my kids PC's, I don't want them to have access to all shares on the WHS. So I tried to remove the share which was being accessed with my WHS administrator ID. But even though I disconnected all the WHS shares, they are still there after reboot.

Question # 1 - How do I remove this Administrator access to all my WHS on this desktop?

Sorry for the long winded post, but I have been tearing my hair out for 2-3 days trying to get this to work.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Do this on the computer where you wish to remove the Administrator account information...

On Vista or XP, click the Start button. On Vista, type "control userpasswords2" in the search box and press Enter. (On XP, click Run..., then type "control userpasswords2" and press Enter.) On Vista, accept the UAC prompt if displayed. This will open the advanced User Accounts management applet.

Click on the Advanced tab, then on Manage Passwords. Select your server in the list, and click Remove. Confirm your way back out.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

Most likely the logon name of the account you are using to logon to the laptop is the same logon name of a user on the server, but the passwords don't match.  You could try installing the Connector software on that laptop and if my thought is correct, you will get a notification that your passwords don't match and that you should select one or the other to synchronize the 2 (or follow Ken Warren's FAQ post about user accounts not matching).

That seems a little more strange.  When you disconnect a mapped share, it should not come back (even after a reboot).  When you created the mapped drive, did use the account name called Administrator (and the password for the server)?

  • Yes, I used the WHS Administrator ID and the password.

I'll look into the other PCs that are having trouble.

On the 3 that I don't have the WHS connector installed, I don't require a USERID and/or PASSWORD when Windows XP starts on the clients.

  • (HELP)

The BIGGER issue I am having is getting WHS "adminstrator" access removed from one of my PC's. Again, I tried to map/connect to one of my WHS shares using the WHS "adminstrator" userid and password. (just using share mapping - WHS connector is not installed on this PC) And I clicked "reconnect at logon". Now I cannot get that PC to stop reconnecting to my WHS as administrator. Now this PC has access to add/change/delete any share on my WHS. This is dangerous as the PC belongs to one of my kids. I have searched the internet for help on disconnecting network shares. But whatever I do, the WHS shares show back up again after reboot.

I did a "net use" command and it doesn't show any shares being connected. However, if I use explorer and goto My Network Places, browse workgroup, and click on "hpserver" (my server name), I can access every share on the server.

ANY HELP on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
