File Name Too Long RRS feed

  • Question

  • I keep getting the following message when I use SyncToy.

Error: Cannot write to the destination file.  The specified path, file name, or both are too long.  The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

What is the difference between the fully qualified file name and the directory name?

I spot checked the character count of some paths and they were all below 260 but were over 250.  When I removed one character from the name of the destination file, the sync processed went thru without ANY errors.  I don't understand this.  Can someone explain this to me please?
