  • Peka,

You may have to wait until you receive your replacement disk. Sounds like you have a non-genuing copy of the operating system.  This will cause major problems. I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing and would like to provide you with some self-help options we have made available for our customers to address the issue you are currently experiencing. Please follow the steps outlined below as it could either resolve your issue or, if need be, provide us with additional information to determine the cause of this issue.

    1. Ensure you log onto the computer experiencing the issue with “Administrator” rights.
    2. Next we would like to confirm that you are running the most current version of the Genuine Advantage control on your computer. In order to do this please follow the below link and choose the “Validate Office” option.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine
If the above steps did not resolve your issue lets continue with the steps below.

I would like to provide some of the self-help options we have made available for our customers to address these issues. If you could please follow the steps outlined below the diagnostics Web Site will attempt to resolve the validation errors you are experiencing with Office.
    http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en
Next follow the on-screen prompts to resolve the issue if any of the checks at the above site fail. You can do this by choosing the “Resolve Now” button if it appears. If, after attempting to resolve the issue as per the instructions on the above site fails, please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.
    1. After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.
    2. Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

If the issue still has not been resolved could you please provide us with the following information?

Please provide the URL from which you downloaded this copy.  Obviously this "ripped" copy is a pirated copy since there is no such thing as an "auto installed product key."

It's possible that malware embedded in this pirated downloaded copy negatively affected the installation and that's what caused you to have to do a clean installation.

  • Peka2k,

The Product Key that was emailed to you is a genuine, permanent Product Key for XP Pro full retail, but it can only be used one time with the Key Updater Utility.

You will have to wait until you receive the full retail XP Pro CD in the mail and then do a clean installation using that CD and the emailed Product Key.

  • i didnt have a key emailed to me, i had an original already, i have order a replacement disk nothing more. my product key witch is genuine wont change!!!

so i am trying to update the bad key to my original legal key, but as previously exsplained when i do this i get an error message that tell's me that the key is already being used. and as once again previously stated i know that this is becaue i renstalled two weeks and used that key to activate.

so........ what i need to know is what i do to be able to change the key, to the legal one? as i am keen to have legal software on my machine and get my updates.

    cheers

  • Peka2k,

What is the source of the "original legal" Product Key?  Why did you have to update it?  For what edition of XP (Pro, Home, Media Center, Tablet) is the product key for, and what type of license (full retail, upgrade retail, systembuilder/OEM, royalty OEM, or Volume License) is the product key for?

    Wednesday, May 23, 2007 2:33 AM
  • the source of the original legal product key is that it is the one that i purchased with the PC full retail.

as previously mentioned more then pnce now, the key that it currently on the computer is illigal and i am trying to update it so that the key is my legal one!!!!!!!

its XP pro both installed and the key that i purchased.

    Anything else needed?

    Wednesday, May 23, 2007 6:33 AM
  • oh the key isnt being used on any other machine! it is for one CPU, it worked perfectly fine two weeks ago when i proformed the SAME proccess!!!!

is my only option to wait for my cd and do a clean install?

    Wednesday, May 23, 2007 6:37 AM
  • Peka2k,

I think you are correct, at this point you will need to do a clean installation using the original, genuine Product Key and the arriving genuine MS XP Pro retail CD.

If your situation were that you could not activate the installation, then a Telephone Activation and a chat with a Product Activation support tech could get activation cleared up, but that is not the case since the current installation is activated but nongenuine.  Once you get the genuine CD and do the clean installation, you still may have to do a Telephone Activation if the Product key has a flag on it.

Sorry to threadjack, but I feel I must. This is quite frankly rediculous and I see no reason why the Key Updater Utility can be used only once!

A simillar thing happend me today; I had an OEM version of XP Pro that was installed on an old pc (circa 2003) that I no longer used. I wanted to use that on a new computer that I had just built, after all why buy it again? After speaking to a rather discourteous female member of staff convincing me that I was a software pirate, I decided to update it through the Genuine [DIS]Advantage.

After sucessfully installing the program from the link by mail after purchasing, my machine promptly crashed soon afer updating [insert obvious remark here] and couldn't install my graphic card drivers. Long story cut short, .Net problems requiring a reinstall. No problems I thought, I have a valid key for this CD now....read on.

After reinstalling with the cd, the new key wouldn't work. No problem, I'll validate with the new key. Reran the Key Updater Utility and as the OP encountered, it says the key is already in use - yes by me, now let me bloody use it!!! Rang the UK support number and guess what, no help available until Tuesday (4 days way because it's a Bank Holiday weekend) or I wait 2 to 4 weeks for the CD. No way Mr Gates. A new pc with no way to get it running. Nice one M$cro$haft.

There was no warning in the email or on the download page that the updater would only run once. Because of this I feel I have an amount of recourse and will be contacting my credit card company to take action for a refund (distance selling regulations). I will get a XP cd from a local shop to get this pc running. If Vista could run my programs I would have taken that route, but it is not an option at this time.

Let this be a warning to all.

  • I Think this is absolutely ridiculous! I am encountering the same problem. After purchasing the Genuine Advantage Kit on line and doing the install I had a bigger problem with my computer and had to do a fresh install with the CD I had which was not valid. I went back to do the validation again and was told the new key I purchased only a few hours ago was in use already. There should really be a better way to do this after all the hours I spent putting all my other programs back on after the new install. Why if we are using the same email address, home information and IP address as the original install can't we put the key back in? If we buy the sytem from Gateway or Dell or HP or any other vendor we could use that one key as often as we wanted on that system, why can't we do the same if it is for the same computer through Microsoft? I think this is a lot of hassle for us who build our own systems or try to fix it without paying for a repair person to do what we can do ourselves. I am now having to wait until Tuesday too because when I called Microsfot yesterday their computers were being updated and I couldn't even get a case number. I was told to call back when I did they were closed and the answering machine said to call today. I called this morning and was transfered by customer service to the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Kit Department and guess what? They are closed on Sunday's and this Monday for the holiday. Why don't the customer service operators know this before transferring? I am a very dissatisfied customer who feels the only person who is getting the shaft is the PAYING customer!

  • Leland5,

You and several other forum posters have recently posted regarding the use of the Product Key Updater Utility.  Specifically you and the other posters expressed your surprise and disappointment that the electronically delivered Product Key from the WGA Kit could not be used more than once with the Product Key Updater Utility.

Here is the text of the upper portion of Product Key Updater Page:

Windows Product Key Update Tool Instructions

The steps below will help you use the Windows Product Key Update Tool to change your product key. Before running the Windows Product Key update tool, read all instructions to ensure that you understand how the tool works and what information is sent to Microsoft as a result of the update process. You may also wish to print this page before starting the update process.

Microsoft recommends creating a system restore point before any operating system changes.

creating a system restore point before any operating system changes.

The Windows Product Key Update Tool:

          • What it does

The Windows Product Key Update Tool will make changes to your Windows installation to update your product key. In addition, the product key update tool will scan a number of key Windows files to determine if they have been tampered with. If tampered files are discovered the product key update tool will alert you before continuing.

          • Information collected

Using the product key update tool results in information being sent to Microsoft. The information collected will not be used to identify or contact you. The information sent is standard Windows validation information as well as information related to the file tampering scan.

Windows validation information as well as information related to the file tampering scan.

I understand this tool will send the above information to Microsoft.

If Microsoft were to add the additional text below to its Product Key Updater Utility page http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx, would that have helped you make a better decision regarding if and when to use the Updater?

              • Single-Use Limitation

In order to protect your genuine Product Key from potentially unauthorized use, we have designed the Product Key Updater Utility so that any given genuine Product Key is permitted to be used only once in conjunction with the Product Key Updater Utility to make any given nongenuine installation of XP a genuine installation.

As a result of this limitation, a user will not be able to use the Updater and the genuine Product Key to make a nongenuine installation of XP genuine more than once.  So, in a usage scenario where a nongenuine installation of XP is made genuine by use of the Updater and a genuine Product Key, any subsequent use of that Product Key and the Updater will be rejected.  This would negatively affect a user who updated and made genuine his of her XP installation, then, upon experiencing an additional or subsequent problem, this user decided to use the media containing the nongenuine XP to do a repair or clean installation with the expectation of once again using the Updater to change the nongenuine installation of XP to genuine.  The user would find attempts to once again use the Updater and the genuine Product Key will be rejected, and the user would have to wait until the physical media of the WGA Kit were delivered to them via postal mail until the user could attempt another repair or clean installation.
