Please introduce delay in mouse-overs RRS feed

  • Question

  • All mouse-overs in the forum UI should have a delay before the popup appears.

It is extremely annoying to run your mouse over some item (on the way to some place else) and have the popup appear.

  • Absolutely. I initially posted a thread requesting that the entire forum card be removed, and that it really needs a delay at the very least.

Now that the forum card is more useful, I think it should stick around. But it definitely needs at least a slight delay before appearing.

  • The hovercard has a delay in it when you hover over a forum name in the Forums list (left rail).  Does that delay feel like the appropriate length to you?

  • If you simply scroll you cursor vertically across the list of forum names you will/should not see hover cards being rendered.  It's only when you slow your cursor to a speed where it could be perceived as pausing over individual items that the hover card will appear.  The question I am asking is whether we have the threshold right, from your perspective, or whether you think the hover card delay should be longer.  Obviously there's a balance to be struck.

In the example above, the cursor is being moved directly to a forum name and then paused.  The pause is causing the hover card to display.

Notice that if you pass over the forum names in the breadcrumbs under threads on the home page there is no comparable delay.  Just scrolling quickly over one on the way to some other part of the page will cause the hover card to quickly render and then disappear.  I believe that's one of the places that @davewilk is asking for us to add a delay.

BTW: I see your hover card looks transparent.  That probably means you're viewing the site in compatibility mode.  I strongly suggest viewing the site in standards mode.  The hover cards should render opaque as designed, and you will probably see a number of improvements in layout..

  • Hi Doug,

I think I'd like to see a bit longer delay than what is currently being used in the left rail. Still though, even the delay that is in use over there currently would be a nice addition.

Yes, I see that the forum name in the left rail, and in View All, now has a delay. This was not the case before the recent update. I think the delay could be longer, but I can live with it (I hardly ever use these features anyway).

The one I AM concerned about is the hover card in the main forum view, because that I use all the time. Now I look at it more carefully, I am seeing inconsistent behavior here. Sometimes there seems to be a delay, sometimes the card begins to display and then hesitates before displaying completely, and sometimes the whole card appears instantaneously (I am using SeaMonkey (same as FireFox) browser on Windows 8).

I am not a Javascript programmer, but I would have thought getting this kind of thing right would be routine.

  • We are increasing the delay to be a full second in our next release. I hope this is more helpful! Thanks again for the suggestion.
