Windows VISTA Validation, Really Annoying RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHAT IS MICROSOFT DOING ABOUT ALL THE PROBLEMS WITH VISTA NOT VALIDATING.

I HAVE DONE EVERYTHING SHORT OF A FULL SYSTEM RESTOR TO MY PC.....WHY SHOULD I DO THAT?

I DO NOT HAVE BAD SOFTWARE...THATS WHY I RAN THE VALIDATION TOOL...FOOL ME...NOW MY PC IS ONLY

GOOD FOR EMAIL AND WEB SURFIN....

    I CAN NOT PRINT

I CAN NOT CHANGE MY BACKGROUND

I CAN NOT PLAY GAMES AND I JUST BOUGHT A NEW $50 GAME...SUCKS

I HAVE BENN BACK AND FORTH WITH MICROSOFT...AND DOING THE THINGS THEY ASKED BUT NOTHING.

I EVEN CALL GATEWAY FOR HELP...THEY TRIED BUT SENT ME A LINK...WHERE DID THAT GO????

    BACK TO MICROSOFT....

I WOULD NOT BE PISSED IF IT WAS JUST ONE OR TWO PEOPLE HERE BUT ITS A LOT....I'M SURE WE CAN NOT ALL HAVE MADE AN ERROR WITH OUR PC's...

MICROSOFT MADE THE MISTAKE IN IT'S UPDATE AND THEY NEED TO FIX IT....

SO WHO AND WHAT IS BEING DONE ABOUT IT????????

WISH I HAD BILL'S # I WOULD GIVE IT OUT AND TELL EVERYONE TO CALL...I'M SURE HE WOULD HAVE A FIX SOON AFTER THAT.

  • Hi limey2471,

I just tested it myself (on a computer in reduced functionality mode) and in safe mode, you should be able to see all installed updates and have the ability to unistall. I may take some time for the updates to finally display, but they will show.

    Thank,

  • I'm also getting this stupid error message and it is really annoying.

Here is my diagnostic report - please advise me on how to get rid of this!

I just purchased this computer and I continue to validate Windows over and over again. It tells me it is validated, and then I get the message that I need to validate it every time I log into my computer.

  • This is not the original poster but I see a similar issue. Copying the results of the tool. What happened is that Windows downloaded and installed an update and ever since then every time I boot I get stuck with a message "Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited ..."

  • Hello cs5211,

Vista is in, what is called a 'Mod-Auth' Tamper state.  There are 2 types of Mod-Auth tampers.

    1) A critical system file was modified on disk - What this means is that the file, located on the hard drive, was modified in some way.

    2) A critical system file was modified in memory - What this means is the file itself (on the hard drive) is un-modified, but the code, from that file, running in the system, was modified in some way.

Because of the Mismatched files listed under the "File Scan Data-->" line of your Diagnostic Report, I beleive your issue is caused by: 1) A critical system file was modified on disk

Number 2 is usually caused by a running program that is incompatible with Vista.

Number 1 can be caused by a malicious program (spyware, malware, virus) or by manual file modification (by a user of the system). There is also a very small chance that an Update may fail in mid-update and cause this type of issue. As a safety mechanism, Updates are made so that if they fail, they roll back any updating that was done before the failure, but there is an off chance that the roll back did not occure.

So, what I would like to do is exclude a failed update as the cause of your issue. To do that, I would like you to uninstall/reinstall the updates that correspond with mismatched critical system file seen in your Diagnostic Report under the "File Scan Data-->" line. (i.e. rpcrt4.dll[6.0.6000.16525]) by following the below steps:

    First, uninstall the updates:

(The below steps assume Vista is currently in reduced functionality)

    1) Log in to Vista and select the options that brings up the Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32\control.exe
    3) You may be asked if you want to Save or Run, select Run
    4) Control Panel will open
    5) Double click the ‘Programs and Features’ icon (in XP it was called the ‘Add/Remove Programs’)
    6) In the upper left hand corner of the window (right under ‘Tasks’) click the “View installed updates” link
    7) Now look for and select KB933729

    8) Click ‘Uninstall’

    9) Reboot

    Now, reinstall the updates:

(At this point, Vista may or may not be in reduced functionality, the below steps assume that Vista is in reduced functionality)

    10) Log in to Vista and select the options that brings up the Internet Browser.

    11) Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

    12) Search for KB933729

    13) In the search results, click the update that has KB933729 in the name.

    14) Click the 'Download' button.

    15) You will be given the choice to Save or Run, select Run

Please post back on if this does or does not resolve your issue.

    Thank you,

  • Hi Darin,

    Thanks for your prior respnse.

    When I do the following

    2) Type: %windir%\system32\control.exe
    3) You may be asked if you want to Save or Run, select Run

I see a window open up for a sec and then disappear. So control panel does not appear. The same when  I browse to control.exe from the browser. This is when I boot see the "unauthorized change" message and choose the "Learn more online" option.

I can open control panel in safe mode. In that when I choose view installed updates I only see one update which is Adobe 8.1. No KB updates.

    Thanks

    Cs

  • Hi Cs,

Yep, you are correct, that was my fault for not thinking of that. Let me see if I can get you alternate steps, stand by.

  • Hello Lisa,

Your issue is diffrent, would you try the first set of steps (below). If those steps do not resolve your issue, please try the 2nd set of steps.

    1st set of steps:

(If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

(If you Do Not access to the start button)

    1) Click the option Access computer with reduced functionality

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    2nd set of steps:

(If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4) Click the Next button.

    5) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7) Click the Start button

    8) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Automated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

Once completed, you may need to reboot twice.

(If you Do Not access to the start button)

the alternate steps to get you to the Change Product Key window is to:

    1) Click the option 'Run with reduced functionality'

    2) A internet Browser should come up, type: %windir%\system32\cmd.exe in the browser address bar

    3) A window with a black background will come up

    4) Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    5) Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    6) Click the Next button.

    7) You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    8) It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 9)

    9) Return to the window with the black background

    10) Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    11) Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    12) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

NOTE: when you call that number, you will first hear an Automated Voice that will try to Activate Vista for you. If the Atomated Voice gives you an option to talk to a Live Activation Rep, select that option. If not, do not enter any numbers. This should force the Automated Voice to transfer you to a Live Activation Rep. Trying to Activate thru the Automated Voice will not work, in your case, only thru the Live Activation Rep will your Activation be successful.

Once completed, you may need to reboot twice.

  • Hello Darin,

I tried the first set of steps.

(If you access to the start button)

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms

    6) Hit the Enter key

    7) Reboot 2 times

I am either typing someing incorrectly - or this does not work for me. I keep getting different errors -

"The system cannot find the path specified."

"Input Error: There is no file extension in "C:\Windows\system32\windir\System32\slmgr.vbs\ilc"".

"Input Error: There is no file extension in "C:\Windows\system32\windir"".

Are the % signs supposed to be spaces?

I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

So I went on to the second set of steps.

I called and talked to a live rep - I gave him my numbers and he gave me more numbers - and then he said it was actived an the error message should go away. So I rebooted - and still got the error message. So I rebooted again and again - and guess what - I'm still getting the error message.

Frustated anyone - yes - PICK ME!

    Now what should I try?

Here is my most recent diagnostic report. I'll be waiting. :-)
