Can I add a computer to the backup list? Reinstalling the Server Console does not work for me... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I may need some expert advice here.
    Abstracted:
I could not get one of my computer to backup, so I removed it from the "Computers & Backup" list in the console and re-installed the WHS Console on this computer -- but that did not help.  My goal is to add this (manually removed) computer back to the backup list and have WHS manage backup automatically.  I have briefly searched this forum but cannot find my answer.

    Detailed:
I have built my own WHS recently and fully patched to PP2 before assigning two computers for backups.  A few days later PP3 was released, so I gladly patched it to PP3, but then powered off the server for three days because I was away from home and wanted to shutdown all home computers since no one was using them.

Before powering them all on, I added one new hard drive (1TB) to the server, formatted it and added it for server storage.

After powering them back on, one of my computers (x86 Vista Ultimate) starts to consistently show a "gray" WHS Console icon at the icon bar, and although I can run the Console and connect to the server from this computer just fine, it shows up as "gray" in the WHS Console's "Computers & Backup" list, with the "Backup Now" and "Configure Backup" buttons disabled.  No back up was made during the time all computers were turned off, which was understandable, but after two days -- still no backup was made, and WHS started warning me for not backing up that computer for 5 days.

I thought that my console version might need to be updated from PP2 to PP3, so I uninstalled the 6.0.20xx.x version and installed the 6.0.2423.0 version on this computer.  It made no difference.  The "Backup Now" and "Configure Backup" buttons were still disabled, and I couldn't back it up manually.

I then removed this computer from the "Computers & Backup" list and re-installed the console on my client computer once again, thinking that if I install the console when this computer is not on the "Computers & Backup" list, it can be added.  That did not work either.  I am running short on ideas and would love suggestions and advices.

So my goal is to add this computer back to the list and have WHS manage its backup automatically.  I would love to avoid re-installing the server OS if possible.

Thank you, any suggestion is welcomed.

It sounds like there might a name resolution issue.  Can you successfully ping your server from that client, both by name and by IP address?  Can you run ipconfig /all on the client that doesn't work, one that does, and the server, then post all of those results here?

  • Hi kariya21,

Yes, I can ping the server from both clients, by name and by IP (all ping results were within 1ms and have 0% loss).  I am posting the results here with Server first, and Client 1 (the one that's having problem) and Client 2 (is working well) to follow.

I remember a minor detail that I should add here -- Client 2 automatically detected that the Console software needed to be updated after the server got patched to PP3, whereas Client 1 did not detect and did not update the Console software (I did that later manually).

    Thanks,
    John
