  • Question

  • I had this problem on 08/28/2010 but ran sfc /scannow from a command prompt (with no errors), rebooted, and the problem seemed to go away. Well, it's happening again. On 09/22/2010, my printer seemed to have disappeared and I could not get the print spooler to run. After some research and modifying a registry setting, my printer is now working.

I used the "alternate" in method 2 by Halima S located at the link below to fix my print spooler problem.

    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7hardware/thread/cfe312e7-95fe-4238-b595-33f99e2ea1a9?prof=required

I even tried a system restore but that failed as well. I have not installed anything new in the last few days. The "not genuine" error seems to have started after I fixed my print spooler problem.

Here are the results of the latest diagnostic test:

  • According to your MGA Report, you have a Gateway Model DX4831 computer, is that correct?  If correct, someone installed an Acer branded Windows 7 Home Premium operating system which can only be activated on an Acer computer.  In order to resolve this issue, you will need to purchase a  Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium – Full Version and perform a "clean install" which requires reformatting your hard drive.

  • Carey, FYI, Acer bought Gateway, Packard Bell and others. Acer SLIC's and keys are showing up in gateway and PB computers (although PB is mostly european).

aambrose, considering the reoccuring problems outlined by you in your other thread I thing you should contact WGA support (free)

Acer own Gateway - it's normal for modern Gateways to have ACER SLIC tables.

  • Thanks guys. I've been reading about others who have had the same issues and I came across this one which seemed to be very similar to mine:

    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/genuinewindows7/thread/29ca38ba-872c-431a-9306-88c0ccd08990

After reading terry65's last post (at the above link), it makes me wonder if I should just try running the Gateway Recovery Management program (my computer didn't come with a CD). It says it will "restore the OS and retain user data". I really don't want to hit a bunch of dead ends and possibly spend hours on the phone trying to figure this out. I just did that with Adobe a few months ago and quite frankly, I don't feel like going through it again with anyone. I paid good money to have a good, fast, and reliable machine. I really hope this doesn't screw up my Adobe CS5 suite.

Something I noticed yesterday that was a little strange -- after I ran sfc /scannow (it always reports no errors) then went to the Services and tried to start Software Protection -- it started! So then I thought I would try a reboot. Well, it was back to the same status after the reboot and I couldn't restart the process.

Oh, and to answer Carey's questions, yes I have a Gateway Model DX4831-03 computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. I've been using it since the beginning of 2010 and it wasn't until last month that all of this started happening. I'm wondering if one of the Windows updates hosed something up.

  • FYI - Don't waste your time trying the "Chat with Customer Service". They will only direct you to a phone number for the "Windows Genuine Advantage team".

Didn't even seem like a real person. :(

  • I seem to be experiencing the same problem.

In March 2010, I bought an HP Pavillon Elite HPE with Windows 7 Home Premium (or sim.).

Still in March, I upgraded online from a company called Windows Warehouse to Windows 7 Professional. The activation with Microsoft worked fine and so did my PC till yesterday, when it started to tell me that my copy of Windows is not genuine, that I might be a victim of software couterfeiting and that my copy of Windows is no longer activated. As I tried to reactivate it, I was told that my key has been blocked!

I would like to know why this happens, why it happens now, after six months of good and loyal service and what I can do to solve my problem without having to buy a new licence.

Here's the result of the diagnostic I just ran on my PC
