Windows Media playlist and default folders? RRS feed

  • Question

  • So in Windows Media player, is there any way to make a playlist on the device? If not, how did that get missed? That seems to be a basic findamental of any media player.

Also- is there a way I can set default folders for music, videos, etc? I don't want it scanning my entire device for music when I keep it all in the same folder on my storage card.

I run a program called Griff, which is a music sequencer. I have several gigs of samples on my storage card for this purpose. I can't tell you how annoying it is to be listening to music on Windows Media Player, and the next song is only a single drum hit, then the next song is a single piano note, etc. I want to tell Windows Media Player which specific folders to include oin the library, and have it ignore the rest. And it's baffling to me that it does not already function this way.

Is there any hope that these issues will be fixed in Windows Mobile 6.5 or 7?

  • To create a playlist within Windows Media Player:

Queue up the songs that you want to have in the list:  Open up WMP, tap Menu > Library > press & hold your stylus on a song until a popup menu appears > select Queue UP.

After you've queued up all the songs you want in your Playlist, tap Menu > Now Playing >  make sure the order is right > then tap Menu > Save Playlist

Changing default folders for music, video, etc:

I don't know of a way to set specific folders for music videos, etc, but you can set WMP up to only search through your storage card for media files as follows:

"Mobile Windows Media Player, when launched, defaults to showing the "My Device" library. You probably want it to open the "Storage Card" library by default. You can remove the "My Device" library listing option completely by deleting the following file: "Mobile Device\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player\XMEMediaLibrary.mlb."  This way, only the files in your Storage Card library will show up in Windows Media Player Mobile. • Yeah, I know how to set Windows Media Player to only search the storage card. The problem is, I have several gigs of audio files on my storage card that are not music (only samples for my music composition/sequencer app). So when it plays songs from the storage card, I will hear a song, another song, and then a single piano note, followed by a single drum hit, followed by a single bass note, and so on and so forth.

Thanks for the queue up tip though.

How do I get a suggestion/request to Microsoft to please allow us to set specific music/video/etc folders in future updates?

  • Thank you SCK9  - the Microsoft team has received your suggestion/request for allowing users to set specific music/video/etc folders in future updates. We appreciation your input. I'm marking this thread as answered just for our tracking purposes but it is still available for viewing and comments.

  • Hello

I was also looking for a way to do this so would also like it to be added in a future version if this is possible.

Maybe in the auto playlist rules folder location could be included as one of the options (then maybe a checkbox to say if this should also include sub-folders).
Possibly also add another one of folder location contains/does not contain to add more flexibility and be able to exclude only certain sub-folders.

  • i love WMP player compare to other music player available in market.. WMP is juz simply the best.. but the interface and functionality need to scrap up.. it cant even compare with desktop WMP v9.

at least folder search function must included. my GPS navigation voice is juz come out halfway while playing n enjoy my nice music.

n playlist management isnt good enuf as well.

thx for taking in suggestion now.. winmo will continue to evolve and always the best platform for phone!

  • One of the tips in my Media Player Mobile Tips/Tricks article Julie linked to was: Do not use the "Update Library" function in Windows Media Player on your Windows Mobile Device. This will add all sorts of audio files and sound effects to your media library from both your main device and storage card.

I agree, that a better way of managing the media library on the mobile device would be good, but right now your best bet is to use Windows Media Player on the desktop to manage your library. If you set up the media syncing from WMP instead of drag/drops in the file system, WMP will create the library database based on only what you sync from the desktop.  That way only your music, TV shows, and videos synced via Windows Media Player on the desktop will show up in Windows Media Player on Windows Mobile.  As a bonus, if you create playlists in WMP on the desktop, they'll transfer to the mobile device when synced.

  • Well I never sync my phone to my computer so that won't work for me. I only use the disk drive mode and sometimes Bluetooth to transfer files over, and MyPhone to backup the contacts, calendar, and tasks.

They just need to let me point Media Player to any number of specific folders where my media is stored, and only search those folders for files.

  • You don't have to sync with Outlook and everything.  You can just set up an auto-sync partnership in Windows Media Player... select a few playlists, and let it go.  If you select auto-playlists to sync with your storage card, they'll auto-update on your device every time you plug into the USB.  I made an auto-playlist for the 5 newest TV shows recorded by Media Center... when I plug the phone in to charge at night, it updates (and transcodes) those TV shows to my device while it recharges.  I hear this works with Zune Pass music as well... you just have to set up the sync from Windows Media Player.

If you want better on-device media management and player support, I highly recommend CorePlayer. That will also play practically anything you throw at it.

  • I'll have to check out Coreplayer I guess.

I can't have my phone limited to only getting music that it syncs from my computer. I am a music producer and I have tons of bands giving me audio files of their songs all the time.

It's kind of poiontless to have a "mobile" device that only works right if you "tether" it to your home computer.

MS just needs to fix their mobile media player before people start jumping ship to another platform. I'm fine with making an option to sync a phone to a computer, but I am not fine with being required to do so in order to get basic functionality. I connect my phone to my computer maybe once per month tops. And when I do connect it, it's always in Disk Drive mode.

And like I said, I get files from tons of people, with tons of different computers. This is all done in disk drive mode too, and each of them has their own folder on my storage card.

Can you imagine if this was the other way around? Imagine is your desktop computer couldn't set certain folders for the media library, and the workaround was you had to set a playlist on your Zune and then sync it. It would be utterly ridiculous, right?

These phones are taking more and more of the everyday computing tasks. I wish MS would treat them as such and stop trying to make them a "companion" to a desktop pc. Having an option to treat it like a "companion" device is good, but we absolutely need to be able to treat it as a stand alone device too.
