Genuine copy of Office 2007 purchased from Microsoft failing OGA validation

Question
-
Hello - purchased a copy of the upgrade to Office 2007 directly through the Microsoft Office Online site (receipt says "DR - A Microsoft Reseller" - order #CNL12494803) on 10/18/08.
Everything's peachy until I tried to download a template for Excel today and hit the Microsoft Office Genuine Advantage alert saying this isn't genuine software and I may be a victim of piracy (bought directly through Microsoft's own site????????????????????????????????????)
Go through the validation steps shown in the "before you post" stickies - the online diagnostics website - all green checks. The downloaded Diagonostic tool says "Genuine". I see the "OGA Data" section says "Validation status: 101 - not activated", but when I try to activate any of the office programs, says, "This product has already been activated."
Here is the report from the Diagonostic Tool:

Hello Tiggertor,
I noticed you have two versions of Microsoft currently installed on your computer. Please uninstall Microsoft Office XP Professional, and restart your computer. Please let us know if this resolves what you are experiencing :-).
Thank you

Hi Stephen,
Hey, thanks for the prompt response!
I'll give that a try and let you know.
I never know when you upgrade if you have to leave the original there for it to work with the serial number and all. (Ha ha, here I thought doing that would AVOID validation type problems, and that turns out to be what may well be causing the problem.)
I really do appreciate your suggestion, and will definitely give that a go.
Thank you very much,
Terry

Tiggertor,
Note this section from your report:
OGA Data-->
Office Status: 101 Not Activated
Microsoft Office XP Professional - 101 Not Activated
Microsoft Office Professional 2007 - 100 Genuine
The validation mechanism is balking at the fact that your Office XP is showing as "not activated."
If it were activated, then then validation system would have seen two legitimate installations of Office and would have allowed you to proceed to the template download.
For best results, however, follow Stephen's advice because sometimes two installations of Office on the same computer may create unusual problems: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828956

If that doesn't solve it...
A solution / work around that has worked for us is to delete the data.dat file (make a backup before doing this) that is found under:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data"
then starting up office and running an online activation.
Once you've done that the validation should go through.
I would maybe do the uninstallation before attempting this though.
Good on ya MS!Wednesday, February 11, 2009 5:46 PM -
