How many times Windows 7 can be activated by using Activate Online without telephone for Activation ID?

Question
-
I have this issue before when using Windows Vista.
I formatted and reinstalled Windows Vista. for what, 10+ times?
When I was using Windows Vista and tried to activate online, it refused to activate and wanted me either purchase a new Windows Vista Home Basic key or using telephone to activate or seek help from Microsoft.
Of course, I used the Telephone activation procedure and I talked to the operators and they cooperately and politely have provided me the activation ID, thus activation successful.
A month ago, I get a clean, retail, genuine version of Windows 7 Ultimate key via some forum website (they are attempting giveaway Windows 7 keys). I formatted and installed Windows 7 Ultimate and used the key to activate -- successful. Activated online, checked via Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and Windows Genuine website -- all pass.
I was wondering, if I were to reformat my system and reinstall Windows 7, how many times does Windows accept by activating using the same key without purchasing a new one/activate via telephone?

Hello Adrian Khor,
Thanks for the help.:-) I searched with "free product keys," "free keys," "key" (which got rejected as being too generic), "product key," and "key code" and got no pertinent results.
Anyway, assuming they are giving away the product pictured, as Carl_OH noted, they are allowed to literally give away an "NFR-Not For Resale" product, but they would of course not be allowed to sell it. Covered in para 12 of the Software Licensing Terms (type winver into Start Search then click the link for the Software Licensing Terms).
If they are just giving away the product key and not the entire package, that is not permitted under the provisions of para 17 of the SLTs. If you only got the key, then they never met the requirements for software transfer as described in para 17, so logically the software is not yours until they give you the entire retail NFR-marked package.
Your original question was "I was wondering, if I were to reformat my system and reinstall Windows 7, how many times does Windows accept by activating using the same key without purchasing a new one/activate via telephone?" I believe the number "5" has been pretty much acknowledged to be the number but I have never seen anything official in, say, an MS KB article.

Could you provide a link to this forum?

Hello Adrian Khor,
After searching the forum I could not find what you mentioned, the free keys to Windows 7. Could you provide a more precise link?
Thanx!

Hmm, I must say that's impossible because it is at the Announcements forum thread.
Here it is: http://windows8beta.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=10

The first giveaway has started last month. I get the keys from there and here's the result:

I don't know where the keys were derived from, the key in your report is NOT a TN/MSDN key. As long as they gave each distinct key to only one person then I think it will be fine, in other words it won't be over activated on several computers (which is what happens with TN/MSDN keys). The boxes they show say not for resale, technically they are not reselling them.
Is there anything wrong with what they did? Depends on the agreement they obtained the product from.
Will your key be blacklisted? Probably not.
The only way this could be a problem as I see it, is if the guy is not really an MVP and/or, he was not supposed to give those away. The boxes say not for resale but he didn't resale them, it appears that he is rewarding those who further the discussion on Windows 7 and upcoming MS operating systems (whatever they choose to call them).

@Carl_OH:
Yeah, its not MSDN keys, it's a retail key from I have been told by the forum admin (who also did the giveaway).
See here: "The keys given in this giveaway are genuine keys and not from Technet and MSDN accounts. Also the winners would be chosen based on the quality of posts and not on the quantity"

As Dan said, and Darin confirmed he should have given you the COA and media for a legitimate transfer of the licensing agreement. I kind of like the concept of what they are doing but I think he should be careful in how he transfers ownership of the license.Saturday, August 28, 2010 2:48 AM

Hello Dan,
Wanna ask if I can activate my Windows 7 onlinely without the nagging of Windows 7 30-day trial notification that always pop-out? (I mean, activate Windows 7 via Validate Windows on http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/), in case if the "Windows 7 Ultimate cannot activate online, require purchase another key or activate it via phone" case happens again.)

Activation and Validation are two distinct and different functions, you can't activate through the validation process, and likewise you can activate without validating. Validation requires the installation of the WAT update, if WAT is not installed prior to a validation attempt at www.microsoft.com/genuine you will be prompted to install it.
To activate you can either activate when installing, or you can choose to activate after installation when prompted or you can invoke an activation attempt by browsing to the system properties page and clicking on "activate windows", or you can use SLUI.EXE to activate by phone (slui 4). If you ever need to activate by phone do the following.
Activate by phone
1. Type "slui 4" in the start menu search box, hit enter
2. Select country or region
3. Dial the number, DO NOT select any menu options, just wait and a person will pick up.
4. activate by phone.

Guys I am the administrator on Windows 8 Beta and as mentioned by Adrian the keys are genuine keys and ofcourse not the technet/MSDN keys as we aren't allowed to distribute them, we are ready to send the NFR package to anyone who resides in India but it isn't possible to send the package to any other country so we are just giving away the key and each winner would be given a separate key and this key can be used like any other Windows 7 retail key..

Hello Ankur Mittal,
Read para 17 of the SLT which covers transfer of license.
