In the process of getting rid of a virus, I've also lost validation with windows xp.

The only problem I can see is that Windows thinks it hasn't been activated - Try activating again. If it fails over the internet, then try telephone activation. If that fails, and the auto-system knocks you out, then phone back, and this time do NOR respond when asked which service you require - this should force a live operator to pick up, who can assist.
