Moving PC backup location and data shares to a seperate external drive. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have WHS installed on Hyper-V server and allocated 75 GB for the OS.  I mounted an external eSATA 1TB RAID 1 drive for the data and PC backups, but cannot get the server to store the daily workstation backups to go there or get the network folders to locate there.  I would like to keep it a separate drive and not combine the OS drive and the external drive into one volume so I can control what data goes where.  Any info is appreciated.

  • It isn't possible to force Windows Home Server to use drives for specific user selected purposes (other than a server backup drive, which you can use to take a snapshot of your shares). Windows Home Server uses internal algorithms to determine what disk to place any given file (or component of the backup database) on, then grants users and programs access to those files just as though they were actually on the system disk.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Windows Home Server doesn't give you the option of specifying what is stored where.
