Determining which product a 25-digit code activates RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a listing of product keys that were copied from the MS genuine stickers on systems when they were bought 4-5 years ago.  Unfortunately, only the 25-digit keys were written down and not the OS to which the key belongs.  Some of the systems had 2000, and the rest were XP Pro.  Is there a way to determine from the 25-digit key to which OS the key belongs?   I really don't want to have to go through a couple hundred systems to look at the labels.

    Thanks

  • Hi donahub,
There is no way a customer can determine the OS from the Product Key. If you have a Microsoft representative you work with, you could ask them if they could ask Product Activation to go through the list. You could also contact your local Product Activation support group yourself (your local number can be determined by selecting "Activate by Phone" for one of your systems), but I think they would be reluctant because they'll have to run each individual PID through a utility to determine the product.

    Good luck,
