  • It's a volume license version with a product key produced by an illegal product key-generator.

  • Thanks, Carey.....Is it counterfeit, or is it a volume licensed version that is unauthorized, i.e. sold outside of the volume licensing rules?  Not that it makes a lot of difference, I just want to know as much as possible as I seek recourse.  Thanks.

  • Is there a way to check this beforehand? I mean before installing the software?

Can I enter the key into any tool to check if it is genuine.

I saw a cheap offer on ebay and I would like to check it without installing.

    Thanks.

  • Hello FatBaron,

There is no publically accessible utility for checking the validity of a given Product Key before installing the product on a computer and then running the mgadiag utility.

Please be very careful about buying software, regardless of whether you buy online or from a person.  The further away from retail prices you get, and the further away from conventional sellers you get, the more likely it is that the software you are buying is counterfeit or pirated.

Microsoft's http://www.howtotell.com site has a lot of great advice on what to look for before you buy, but when buying online you can't see and touch the merchandise until you buy it.
