  • Question

  • hi guys,

the pc in question is a ghosted image with a different key and the hard ware is about 1-1.5 months older. same cpu, same hard drives and all from the same vender. i do have 4 pc's, 1 WHS, and 2 laptops on my network, all work but this one. 3 pc's ( including this one.) windows XP 32bit sp3. laptops running vista 32 ulmit. and 1 with xpsp2 64bit

one has the problem and the other does not.

the one that come up with the back up error. i can do a back up from the pc, and from the network ( ie. from a pc in the other room and from the server itself) a manual backup with out a problem.  but when the timer on the server comes on and says to the network time for a backup. get in line and get ready to start. it does not and says the " can not do a snapshot ".

ok done chkdsk, done the reg hack, defrag, and even went and turned off the save power on the nic card, which WHS wants to turn on by default.
a error showed up this morning in the event log on the pc. it was "can not do a shadow copy because of the free space."
like i said 2 pc's and one work and this one does not.

the drive in question is a 1tb drive. it has 685 gb free space.
went and looked at the application events and about 30 min after the back up was ended by the server this showed up.

Do you have more than one hard drive/partition on the client that won't back up?  If so, how much free space do you have on each one?  How much free space is on your server?

  • Did you already try to run chkdsk /r on the client PCs disk, which could not be backed up?

Are there other errors and warnings in the event log? (especially COM+ or DCOM)

    Best greetings from Germany

  • hi guys,
during the last few months it was all ways a hit or miss on the back up on the one and one one box. ( even tho i had a clone of it working all the time. ) so i tryed getting driffent hard drives ( dfirent size and manf.) . same issuse.well after a power failure last week
i did start to get a com + error.
the unit is now doing a hdd out of the box restore, and will be done in 24 hours.

i when thru a hole big list and every thing said to reload windows. well i did not want to believe them.
found out on the 23 of last month WHS team replaced a new PP sure it is a beta but if i had to reload windows then why not try.
on the two units that are the same, after i ran the power pack 3 on the server i lost them, the others stayed there. so i lost 2 boxes out of 5.
so i ran the new connector software in the server folder on each of the boxes, and they came back. now the one that had the problem will still not do a back up. the other now has a issues with the a windows driver and the sound chip ( it chipes during the windows boot screen and now does a click every second ) . but it does back up, but it is broken. on these to units i can not run the restore cd because the nic is not seen still.

i am a old school tech. from back when windows 3.1 was new.
back when windows nt and me was out. my job got a bunch of compaq laptops. the came with me. a few had to be upgraded to nt for the network admin's. well they would not work because the nic in them was a " win-Nic " would only work in plug n play mode. and no the compaq or the chip manfu. would nor relece an nt driver for them.
yes the PP 3 did help on the overall network but it broke the two problem chieldren.

so i still do not know the anwnser to the problem. yes i removed the sql writer and the msde writer still the same problem.

  • yes 2 hdd in the box wich is the same as the one that is now clicking at me. the one that would only do a hit and miss has 640 hdd green. and a 525 hdd. only one partion on the disk. both have over 400 gb free. the server has 3.78 tb for back up. the space used is 1.4 tb.
have set the back up time to 1 hr on the tools windows.
after doing all that i can think of i am still in the dark
