windows activation error RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've had my laptop for well over an year now.

Just recently it started asking me to activate windows during my log on.

When I click okay to activate my windows, I get a windows activation error with error code 0x80070426.

I also recently started getting messages like "windows can't check for update".

I also recently tried to attach a new usb mouse and keyboard, but system won't recognize them, saying it can't install usb driver (or some similar message).

I tried to run "net start slsvc" and got the following error:
    C:\Windows\system32> net start slsvc
The Software Licensing service is starting.
The Software Licensing service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System error 34 has occurred.

The wrong diskette is in the drive.
Insert *** (Volume Serial Number: ***) into drive ***.

I downloaded MGADiag.exe and ran it. But when I click on the "Copy" button, I get an error message sayin
Failed to create output files, hr = 0x800706b5. Please contact support.

But it did copy the following text... hope this is the correct diagnostic message...
BTW, I do have the product key and ID from the bottom of my laptop, and it is not the same as the information shown in the diagnostic report.
I do not have the OS installation CD (did not come with the purchase).
Just to make sure, the ID I have is the 14 digit code, and the product key is 25 character code.
Please help me get my computer back to sane state...

  • Hello YahooMarcus,

You will notice that under the "File Scan Data-->" line there are a large number of files that are listed as Mismatched. All those files listed, are Critical Vista System files. Normally, when there is one or two Mismatched files, it means that those files have been tampered or corrupted in some way. But in your case the Diagnostic Report is reporting that ALL your Critical Vista System files are Tampered or Corrupted. This is highly unlikely. Whats more likely is that your System Catalog has been tampered or corrupted. The System Catalog stores all the Signatures Hash (think fingerprint) for all the Critical Vista System (and other) files. One of the things that Vista uses the System Catalog for is to identify if a file has been tampered or corupted because if the file had been modified in any way, it's signature hash would not match what is listed in the System Catalog and in that case Vista would flag itself as Non-Genuine.

I highly recommend that you first try to Repair Windows using System Restore:

    1. Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
    2. Click the Start button
    3. Type: Backup and Restore
    4. Double-click the listing for the "Backup and Restore Center"
    5. On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"
    6. Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days",
    7. Select "Choose Different Restore Point", select the restore point that corresponds to a date Before you first experianced an issue.
    8. Click the "Next" button.
    9. Reboot back into Normal mode
    10. Run the Diagnostic Tool again and paste the results into NotePad or Word doc and scroll down to the "File Scan Data-->" line.
11a.     If there are any Mismatched files listed, they you will need to restore to a point further in the past.
11b.     If there are No Mismatched files listed, then your Vista will report as Genuine.

If that doesn't work, we'll try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad Vista files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.

    1) Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)
    2) Launch an Internet Browser
    3) Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field
    4) Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe
    5) Right-click the file and select Run as Administrator
    6) In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow
    7) Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.

If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either to contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or you may need to reinstall Vista.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

I've had my laptop for well over an year now.

Please help me get my computer back to sane state...

every single file affected by the SLS services is quoted as being mismatched -- which means that the licensing data itself is off-kilter.
From this I infer that the Licensing Store is broken in some way - so that's the first thing to try.
Please follow the below steps to recreate the Licensing Store and its data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'  <-Very Important
    5) Type: net stop slsvc   (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate.

once complete, reboot and run another MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • Thanks for the reply, but it didn't work.

step 5) net stop slsvc didn't work because the service wasn't up.
step 9) net start slsvc still didn't work - same error as before.
step 10) cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc didn't work - permission denied!! (yes I am running as administrator)
restarted couple of times, no activation message, and the tokens.dat file is still not recreated.

Trying net start slsvc still gives the same old error...

Please repost a new MGADiag report - things may have changed.

I only remember seeing this error once before. We were unable to resolve the issue on the forums and had to refer the person to assisted support (see the below URLs for assisted support). Unfortunately the person never came back to the forums to tell us if and how they were able to fix it.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

  • I HATE THIS FREAKING MICROSOFT BS!!!
I went to the assisted support website listed above.
Picked up a phone number for support.
Waited through voice mail menu to talk to someone for about 2 minutes, and was given another tech support number for my issue.
Repeated that cycle twice more with new numbers that were given to me.
The last guy says I need to talk to activation support team (REALLY???) and gave me another number - 1-866-740-1255.
When I called that number, a voice recording came on and said there is another number (not a toll free#) and said it will cost me to talk to tech support.
What kind of BS is this anyway!!!
    <flame off> ...sorry

    Backup and Restore didn't work.
Restore point only goes back about a month, and I tried to oldest - nothing changed.
Running scannow... not sure if that will help (slow).
So I might have to resort to re-installing VISTA.
BUT, my computer never came with the installation disc.
Called the manufacturer (averatec) who said I have to buy the vista disc.

Any help on where I might be able to download image file for Windows Vista home premium?
I have all the product keys (from the bottom of my laptop), so I should be able to burn a install CD and go from there... right?

    First off - it's not a CD, it's a DVD!
Wait until the SFC scan has completed before jumping off the cliff :)
You're in the US, so WGA support is supposed to be free - did you explain that it's a WGA problem?
There is NO legal download of ANY Windows OS, except when you purchase a license through the MS Store or Digital River.
What you can try is borrowing a Full Retail Vista Home Premium disk from a friend, and using that to reinstall the OS (although that may only be able to do a clean install).

Is there no recovery partition? Can you not create the recovery disks using software from the original install?? (I've never played with an Averatec machine) - check your manual. (If you've lost it, you should be able to get a copy here http://www.trigem.com/support/manuals.asp - but it won't work for me at the moment!)

Remember to back up ALL data to external storage before attempting any reinstall - it may/will wipe everything!

I finally managed to find an Averatec manual - it seems that the System Recovery options are accessed using F5 during the BIOS checks Note that one of the options will wipe ALL data, programs and system files from the user drive, so use with caution, and back up first!!!

  • Thank you for all your assistance.

I resolved issue by re-installing VISTA. It's taking quite a bit of time re-installing all my applications... and there were some application data that I "forgot" to back up, so I lost some data. But I didn't jump off the cliff :) :)

The "tech support" really was not much help. I told them it is WGA issue. They were just too happy to pass me on to another "more appropriate technical support" number. And after few phone numbers, I got to the phone number that had a recording that gave me a new number and said that it is a paid support.... and that's what got me t'd off.

I didn't know about F5. Thanks for finding that out.

I also called averatec's tech support, who never even mentioned recovery. They just said they can send me a recovery CD (they said CD, not DVD; though I'm sure it really is DVD) for a small fee.

I wound up downloading vista iso image using utorrent, downloading a program to burn DVD from iso image, burn the VISTA DVD, then installed vista. It didn't do 100% what I wanted, but at least my computer no longer says it is not genuine... and I can now use my new usb keyboard, get vista updates, etc. Very much a happy ending (but still got gripes against microsoft and averatec tech supports).
