  • To expand on Jim's answer, you *are* protected from known reported variants. The worm exploits a security hole that was patched by Microsoft via Windows Update in 2008. If your system is up to date, your system is protected even without OneCare.

  • I am current on windows and onecare updates, yet when I run Spyware Doctor it shows that there are various low level to medium level threats...and that if I purchase the Spyware Doctor the problem can be fixed.

What's this about?  Thought I would be clean if current.

  • If these "low to medium level threats" are something other than cookies, which are really no threat at all, please post back what was found.

I can't tell you what Spyware Doctor is reporting, but the fact is that various security programs report threats very differently. No, you should not purchase and install another security program if you plan to continue using OneCare as they will conflict and cause more problems than Spyware Doctor claims it can "fix" for you.

  • Steve,

I doubt that I've got all that unique a situation, but....

I installed OneCare on all my computers prior to the April 1st media scare about Conflicker.  Sure enough, one of my laptops cannot connect to the update.microsoft.com.  That laptop has been infected with some virus for many months which has been screwing up search results on IE7 (and eventually Safari) which either produced bogus links to valid search results and then morphed into providing real links to real search results but then throwing the browser past the URL you chose to some junk website (which you often couldn't back out of).

OneCare cannot get any new updates on my laptop because the virus on my laptop (which OneCare can't detect, apparently) prevents the laptop from connecting to update.microsoft.com to get the latest XP security patches.  And, just for fun, the virus turns off the Automatic Update settings each night.  That OneCare doesn't seem to know this virus exists and is being defeated by it daily is either amusing or exasperating.  And the generic fault code I get when the Update fails has to do with 'connection problems' which, of course, are not solvable with OneCare or XP.

    Ideas?

  • It would be best to contact support for help with removing malware that One Care did not detect. How to reach support - http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/30400b52-7f26-4ba0-bc18-17e305329d90
