An "invalid licence" problem

    Question

  • On one of my computers, a member of my family did something unfortunate and is now facing an invalid license problem.

It had begun today, and I have yet to find an answer to the problem. A kind thanks for any support.

  • The result is still the same - you need to change the Key to the one on your COA sticker

You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need to activate by phone.

  • Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.

    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type: net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice.

You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • I have unfortunately seemed to hit a wall at step five. Firefox, the browser that opens for the aforementioned computer, does nothing but attempt to download copies of cmd.exe from the directory. Right clicking does nothing else different, so I tried elevating cmd using runas in cmd. However, even though none of the users, admin or otherwise, had a password, trying to use runas results in a failure (though I couldn't type a password anyway).

    Thank you, Reduced Functionality

  • Change the default browser to Internet Explorer for this - Boot to Safe mode to enable access.
