Vista suddenly not genuine.. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello all,

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which I purchased in Febuary of this year(2008).   After installing the latest set of of Windows Updates today (Nov. 28th,2008), Windows Vista is now complaining that some unauthorized changed has happened and that this version of Windows is no longer genuine.    I have tried booting up in Safe Mode and restoring to an earlier point and nothing is working.   I even restored to the older restore point and the same error about unauthorized changes and windows no longer genuine message is popping up.    Can anyone help??    Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me...

    Sam

    6. Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days",

    7. Select "Choose Different Restore Point", select the restore point that corresponds to a date Before you first experienced the issue.
    8. Click the "Next" button.
    9. Reboot back into Normal mode
    10. Run the Diagnostic Tool again and paste the results into NotePad or Word doc and scroll down to the "File Scan Data-->" line.

11a)     If there are any Mismatched files listed, they you will need to restore to a point further in the past.
11b)     If there are No Mismatched files listed, then your Vista should report as Genuine.

If the above steps do not resolve your issue, your other options are to either reinstall Vista or contact Vitsa support at http://support.microsoft.com for additional support options.

  • Hello,

Just reboot your system and go to SAFEMODE and delete your last 3 updates. And you have your pc back :)

  • Hi wolfke,

Thank you very much for the response.   I have already tried using System Restore to restore to a early October restore point and it is still not working.    This restore point un-installs the last 5 windows updates and the same error is popping up.    It is the oldest restore point I have on the computer and the same error pops up.

  • Good Morning Tard,

In your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report it shows the error code "Online Validation Code: 0x80070426". This means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped. Windows Vista uses this service to check itself and confirm it is Genuine. When the service is stopped, Windows Vista is unable to confirm its own Genuine status and may show Genuine or Non-Genuine. The fact that the Service has stopped is also, most likely, the cause of other issues you may be experiencing (such as not having access to the Control Panel).

Please try the first set of steps and if it does not resolve the issue, move on to the next set.

The first sets of steps are how to set the Software Licensing Service to start at each Windows Vista Start-up.

     1. Click Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  services.msc

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard

    3. The Services window should now open

    4. Scroll down to Software Licensing, then right-click on it and select Properties

    5. Under the General tab, click Stop button.

    6. Set the Startup Type to Automatic, and then click Apply

    7. Next, under Service Status, click Start button.

    8. Last, restart your computer.

The second set of steps is the Manual steps to Force Start the Software Licensing Service. Once you type the net start slsvc command and hit Enter, if you receive any error, then, for some reason, Windows Vista is not processing the command correctly and the issue is larger than just a Software Licensing problem. In which case, I would suggest contacting Windows Vista support below: http://support.microsoft.com

If you have access to the Start button:

    1) Click Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

If you do not have access to the Start button:

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

Thank you for visiting the Genuine Advantage forum.

  • Hi Stephen,

Thank you very much for your response.   I tried to start the Software Licensing Service and unfortunately, I did receive an error in the DOS box.   The error it shows is:

The Software Licensing Service could not be started.

    A system error has occurred.

    System Error 54273 has occurred.

The system cannot find message text for message number 0xd401 in the message file for BASE.

Any ideas??  thanks for any help you can provide..

Also, in the first post with the Diagnostic information, it shows the following:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\Slsvc.exe[6.0.6000.16509]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\regapi.dll[hr = 0x80070714]
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\netplwiz.dll[hr = 0x80070714]

Can this be the cause??   How would I go about fixing it so that their no longer any file mismatches??

    Sam

  • Hi Stephen,

I have already tried this.   I restored to the oldest restore point on the computer (Oct. 3rd, 2008) and the Windows not Genuine error still shows up when I boot into Normal mode.   I can't really understand what happened.  The computer was working fine until the last Windows Update (Nov. 28th, 2008).   Now even the oldest restore points which were working before are no longer working.  The Diagnostic shown in the 1st post was run on the computer after I restored to the oldest restore point(Oct.3rd,2008).

I have already contacted Microsoft Support but I have not heard from them yet.   I also contacted Dell Support and they recommended that I re-format the whole hard drive and re-install Vista since they have no idea what happened.   I will wait for the Microsoft Support response before I do anything.   Thank you once again for your help and suggestions..

  •  Tard,

Curious have you ran an Antivirus check as well as other Anti-maleware checks? Curious if you run an AV program let me know if you system has any.  More than likely when you have this many mismatched files you will have to restore your system.
