change location of shared folder

Question
-
Hi,
I added a new machine yesterday. when pointing one of the mesh folders to exisiting folders i made a mistake and mesh ended up creating a new folder to sync to.
To clarify, i had a folder on teh new machine called my stuff. there is a mesh folder called my stuff too. When I tried to sync the 2 i accidentaly had mesh create a new folder called my stuff in another location.
How can i get mesh to stop syncing with the new folder it created and start syncing with the older one?
Thanks,

Go to the Live Desktop at www.mesh.com and select the folder and change the sync settings to *not* snc with that PC.
On the PC, the folder will change from a blue Live Mesh folder to become a normal yellow folder. Once that happens, delete or move the folder as desired.
Now, back to the Live Desktop and change the properties again to sync that folder to that PC. On the PC the light blue shortcut of the offered folder will appear on the PC desktop. Left click it to open the properties to configure/accept the sync, and click browse to navigate to the folder on the PC that you actually intend to sync with. Accept the warning about merging and conflicts.

I have tried your solution a couple of times; I removed the share and when it changes to a normal yellow folder I moved it to my desired location. But when I went back and re-shared the folder it added it back to my desktop as a solid blue folder that will not allow me to change the location. Other folders that I shared did show up on the desktop as a light blue short cut that allowed me to change the location. What am I doing wrong?Thanks!-SteveWednesday, January 27, 2010 4:16 PM

Hi, -Steve (from -steve) <g>
I wrote up some more detailed instructions which I'll paste below. So, repeat the process of changing the sync settings to not sync with that PC. Then remove the desktop yellow folder.
Then do the following:
Double clicking when it is faded light blue folder, brings you to a windows titled:
Synchronize folder
The text at the top of the window says "Synchronize folder with this computer."
The name cannot be changed/
The location is the path to your desktop folder.
Next to this is browse.
At the bottom of the Window is OK and Cancel.
OK accepts the default offered location - your desktop.
If you click OK, it will become a darker blue folder (still light blue) and it is now fixed to your desktop.
If you click Browse, you can navigate to a folder of your choosing.
Once you have reached that folder, click OK and accept the warning about merging with an existing folder and potential for conflicts.
Now, if the folder once again shows up as a dark blue folder immediately, I suggest that you actually remove the device from your Mesh via the Live Desktop and uninstall Live Mesh. Then reinstall and use the steps above to merge each offered folder once again.
Do let me know if that one troublesome folder once again shows up without the ability to change its location...

Thanks for your quick response. Finally have the folder in the location I wanted. Why doesn't Mesh pop up a dialog box with every share on a new device asking for the desired location instead of placing it in a default location and forcing the user to move it?Thanks again!-SteveThursday, January 28, 2010 3:55 PM

You're welcome and that's a good question.
It has been a request in the suggestions threads for as long as I remember. The default location of the desktop annoys me to no end. :-)

Stephen, I tried your directions step-by-step _twice_ and both times I got a dark blue folder on my desktop _instead_ of a light blue folder without even touching it! I'll explain exactly what I did.
Computer: Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit
1. Logged in to Live Desktop.
2. Selected folder "Contacts" in Live Desktop.
3. Right-clicked folder "Contacts" in Live desktop > Selected "Never Sync" for the device on which I wanted to move the folder.
4. On my PC I created a new folder called "Mesh" in my User folder. Double-clicked to open folder. Arranged window to right side of screen.
5. Switched to my PC Desktop. the Contacts folder was now a normal, yellow, Windows folder. Dragged it to the "Mesh" folder created in my user folder to move it.
6. Returned to Live Desktop.
7. Right-clicked on the "Contacts" folder in Live Desktop and set it to Sync.
8. Minimized all windows with Win+M to see desktop.
9. New blue mesh folder appeared named "Contacts". It was _immediately_ dark blue, and Mesh synced all the files again from the Live Desktop to my PC.
Any ideas? For the record, in the setting for Mesh on my PC I have the "Hide folder shortcuts on the desktop for unsynchronized Live Mesh folders." checked. Could this be why? I will try it unchecked and see.
UPDATE:
Steven, your instructions for moving the folder have one flaw in them. Your steps are to 1. turn off syncing of the folder in Live Desktop. 2. Move folder from desktop on target PC to new location. 3. Re-enable syncing of folder in Live Desktop. 4. Double-click "light blue" folder on PC desktop and choose Browse to map it to new location.
The problem is that your step 4 must come BEFORE step 3. As soon as you move the folder from your desktop to a new location (at least in Win7 HP 32-bit), a "light-blue" folder shows up on the desktop BEFORE you have re-enabled syncing from Live Desktop. You need to double-click this light-blue folder and then click Browse to map it to the new location. It will give you the warning about "merging" which you can accept. As soon as you do this the light-blue folder will disappear from the desktop, and the folder will _automatically_ beset to sync without having to reset it in Live Desktop. Your folder in its new location will still look like a normal windows folder until/unless you refresh the window.
So your steps need to be rewritten as follows:
1. Log in to Live Desktop. Right-click on the folder you wish to move and choose "Never Sync" for the target PC on which you wish to move the folder.
2. On the target PC the folder on the desktop will turn into a normal Windows folder. Move this folder to the desired new location.
3. A "light-blue" folder will appear on the desktop. Double-click this folder and click the Browse button. Navigate to the new location of the folder and click OK. Accept the warning about merging. The light-blue folder will disappear from the desktop.
4. In Live Desktop, check that the folder has been reset to sync. It should already be done.
5. On the target PC in the window with the folder in its new location, if that folder still looks like a normal Windows folder, REFRESH the window (Right-click on an empty space in the window, choose Refresh) and it should change to a blue "Mesh" folder.
IMPORTANT! You must have "Hide folder shortcuts on the desktop for unsynchronized Live Mesh folders." in the Mesh options UNCHECKED or you will NOT see the light-blue folder on your desktop in step 3. To uncheck this, right-click on the MOE icon in your system tray. Choose Options. Uncheck "Hide folder shortcuts on the desktop for unsynchronized Live Mesh folders."Monday, February 15, 2010 2:17 PM -
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll look to update my steps in the near future.

Hi guys,
Agree - this is a fundamental feature of file management and needs to be better than this.
Imaging this... right click on MESH folder on desktop and select 'Live MESH Options' > 'Move MESH Folder' > 'browse' > OK.
To have spent so much time digging around to implement this means there is a failure in the systems implementation.
:Rant end
Further to the guides above, I was unsure how, after moving the folder in point 2. the folder would then magically appear in light blue mode on desktop again. After backing up folders- i suggest the following process which worked perfectly for me on XP with current version of MESH @ 20100304:
So your steps need to be rewritten as follows:
1. Log in to Live Desktop. Right-click on the folder you wish to move and choose "Never Sync" for the target PC on which you wish to move the folder.
2. On the target PC the folder on the desktop will turn into a normal Windows folder. Move this folder to the desired new location.
3. With the folder in it's NEW location, right click on folder "Add Folder to Live MeSH" You will be prompted with "There is an unsynchronised folder named ..... Would you like to Syncronise........etc?
Select 'Yes" and you will be provided with the option to [finally] edit the Location.. [don't need it now of course].
Select "OK'
All done!
All up - MESH is a great tool - and works well on Snow Leopard also BUT... please think of the children and add this MASSIVELY called for feature to control where MESH stores its folder... most of us have been indoctrinated to store docs in their [My] Documents folder... not on their Desktop. Just good housekeeping.
