I'm confused about what "UNIQUE" means RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am really confused.

    I was doing research for an easy (automatic) way to display the "This PC" or "Computer" icon on all user desktops I create. I found a script at:

    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcenter/How-to-show-This-PC-or-7cbcfe7b

    Using Regedit and the key identified in that script I exported the key to make a reg-file for future use. Then I did a little more research. The key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons

    has two subkeys:

    ClassicStartMenu and NewStartPanel

    What I cannot understand is that BOTH of those subkeys contain a value named:

    {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

    Because that looks awfully like a GUID - yet there are TWO, and I thought the "GU" meant Globally Unique - I am confused.

    Is there a good explanation? (I've probably just missed something somewhere along the way)

    TIA !!
