HD crashed; used recovery disks created at time PC bought - still getting Windows not Genuine error; COA label completely unreadable. RRS feed

  • Question

  • The HD on my Toshiba crashed and I had to have it replaced.  I used the recovery media I created when I bought the laptop a couple years before the crash and was able to reinstall most programs (Office '07, for instance). The MS COA on the bottom of the pc is totally unreadable (believe me, I have tried!), and I get the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message and the Activation screen all the time.  I called Toshiba and they told me to call Microsoft.  I called Microsoft and they told me to call Toshiba.  I can't afford to pay for a new version of Windows, and don't think I should have to since I already have it and it IS valid.  Any recourse at all?

  • The installed Product Key is the default Key which cam never be activated.

You need to change the Key to a valid one and activate that.

You say you used the Recovery media your machine created? Such media usually contain the proper OEM_SLP Key and don't require any other.

    This is worth trying...

Change the Key to the  following.. 6B88K-KCCWY-4F8HK-M4P73-W8DQG

    and reboot TWICE.

    Then post another MGADiag report.
