Moving around hardrives RRS feed

  • Question

  • Had a question... I have an HP Mediasmart unit that is full of drives, a bunch of external USB drives and an external eSata box. The eSata box can support 4 drives, 2 are installed. I wanted to move 2 of the terabyte drives from the HP box into the eSata multiplier since opening it up is more of a pain then sliding in an extra drive into the HP box.
Is it as simple as moving the existing drives from the HP box to the eSata box and the data will be preserved and WHS will remain happy or do I need to remove the drive using the console environment, transferring all the data etc.

I've posted to both the hardware and software forums as this touches on both topics.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Yes, it's that simple. There's an identifier on the disk, so Windows Home Server will recognize it when you move it to the eSATA enclosure. Assuming the eSATA enclosure and your eSATA controller support the additional drives, that is; that's a separate question and not related to WHS per se.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
