Upgrading Office

  I have Office Basic Edition 2003 (Word, Excel and Outlook). Do I have to upgrade to office 2007 and then 2010. When I upgrade how does this affect my documents that are stored in the 2003 format. Will the templates I made in the 2003 have to be redone in the newer version? Thanks in advance for the info.
