Office Pro 2007 suddenly not genuine after a year ?

Question
-
Hi - I have 2008 Toshiba Satellite bought locally which came with preinstalled Vista & MS Office Pro 2007. All worked well for a year or more and then I get the *This copy of Office is not genuine* message. I've been through the process of trying to activate Office again, but it tells me everything has already been activated.
I've been through the LegitCheck procedures http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/validate.aspx?PartnerID=408&LegitCheckError=108
and only seem to be given options to purchase.
I've been through this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927921 and maybe there is something I'm unaware of with Perpetual vs. Subscription vs. trial versions that came from Toshiba.
I have the original MS Office Pro 2007 product key card that was delivered with the machine and would appreciate your help to resolve this anomaly!
thanks!!

Hello iwishyouknew,
My best guess about your situation is that the Office Professional 2007 that was preinstalled on your Toshiba when you first got it was somehow replaced with the current nongenuine installation. If you had the computer repaired, or the operating system and/or its software reinstalled, this would be the most likely time for the replacement to have happened.
The first thing to try in this situation would be to change the Office product key from the current nongenuine Volume Licensing Key to you Genuine product key on the card. Please follow the steps in this MS KB article to attempt the change: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456
If the above attempt does not work, then the next best thing to do would be to uninstall the current nongenuine installation of Office, then do a fresh installation of Office using the product key on your keycard. Follow these steps:
(1) Please use the MS FixIt in this MS KB to uninstall the nongenuine Office that is installed now: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179/
(2) After running the MS FixIt, restart the computer twice.
(3) Next, cleanly install Office using the installation means supplied to you by Toshiba. This could take the form of genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation disc(s), or could be in the form of an Applications and Drivers disc supplied by Toshiba. If you did not get an Applications and Drivers disc with the computer, then you may need to run the Toshiba utility that makes this disc and the Operating System recovery discs. One other possible way to cleanly install Office would be to go to the Microsoft website where you can download the backup files needed to reinstall the 2007 Microsoft Office System, which is here: http://trial.trymicrosoftoffice.com/msft-orpc/default.aspx?culture=en-US The download files on this site are tailored to work with the MediaLess Licensing Kit product key that you received with your Toshiba. In order to get this file download you have to respond "Yes" to the question, "Did you buy your Office medialess license within 90 days of buying your PC?"
(4) Install and activate your Office normally, then restart the computer.
(5) After restarting, and keeping Office programs closed for the moment, visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button to ensure Office validates normally. After validation, open several Office programs to make sure you no longer see the nongenuine notices.
(6) Finally, run Windows Updates as many times as necessary to make sure your fresh Office installation is fully updated.

Hello iwishyouknew,
Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

At the moment your Toshiba Satellite laptop computer is reporting that it has a nongenuine installation of Office Professional 2007. The report is telling us that the installation of Office Professional 2007 is a Volume Licensing installation that was done with a nongenuine Invalid Volume Licensing product Key.
An Invalid product key is a product key that is made up by software pirates using a program called a Key Generator, or KeyGen for short. These keys mimic real product keys in that they match the algorithm used to make the real product key, so they "fit" the software's "lock," but since they were not officially made or released by Microsoft, they are Invalid.
However, there is something in the Other Data section of the report that I am not sure about. To help clear this up, it would be helpful if you could compare the Product Key that is on the Product Key Card that you received with the computer to the product key that is now installed. To do this, search the internet for and download and run a small harmless utility called "The Magical Jellybean Keyfinder." It will report the Prodcut Key used to install Office.
We are interested in whether the Product Key found by the Keyfinder is the same as the Product Key on your Card. Please post back to let us know, but of course do not post the actual Product Key itself.

Thank you Dan, Belarc and Keyfinder both report identical Product Keys from the laptop which are different to the Product Key/COA card.Sunday, March 28, 2010 9:09 PM
