Converting .pst file to .xlsx

  One of the ladies in our office saved an excel file as a PST file. In the documents library it was saved as file type PST. When this file is opened in excel it is unreadable (lots of strange letters and symbles. I need to convert this into a .xlsx file. I have tryed save as .xlsx to no avail. I have Googling, finding online converters and any articles I could find. No good. Any help would be appreciated.
