Manual pre-sync of computers to avoid bandwidth & time limitations for initial sync? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm on a 1.5MB/384K DLS connection, and have a PC folder with 3.9GB that I want to sync with Desktop and another computer.  It takes forever and uses up all my bandwidth (I did it once successfully from PC#1 to Desktop).  I want to avoid the extra 3.9GB (time & bytes) of download to PC#2.

Is it possible to MANUALLY copy the 3.9GB folder from one PC#1 to PC#2 (e.g. using a USB flashdrive), and then set up Mesh to sync changes from that point on?  This would give folks a great head start if it is possible.

If possible, what steps would be required?

    Thanks!

If you can please send me your log files in a feedback on Connect.  Http://connect.microsoft.com/livemesh

  • The way I've done this is to copy the files to PC#2 before adding the folder on PC#2 to Live Mesh. I suppose you could copy the files over after setting up sync but I would at least sign out of Live Mesh on PC#2 before adding the files. You should just be able to copy the 3.9 gb of files with the folders already synced and Live Mesh running but I've never done it that way.

  • JimR1 - I tried you suggestion with a small folder called "faxes" on PC1.  I added it to Live Mesh.  Then I copied via USB Flashdrive the Faxes folder to PC2.  Then I added the folder on PC2 to Live Mesh.  what I ended up with is 2 "Faxes" folders on Live Mesh.

I'm still not getting it right it seems.  Did I miss something?

    Thanks.

  • When you create the folder "faxes" on PC1 and set it to sync to Live desktop and PC2 you should get a blue Mesh folder on the desktop of PC2. Create a folder on PC2 called "faxes"on PC2. On PC2 if you right click the blue Mesh folder that was created on the desktop and you will see sync options. On PC2 select PC2 and browse to the folder"faxes" you created and sync that with Live Desktop and PC1. You should then end up with only one "faxes" Live Mesh folder.

  • I get this when using the procedure from Jim above, when I try to sync the PC2 folder with Live Mesh.  If I try to sync again, I get another message saying that I have an unsynchronized folder already with that name, do I want to synchronize it instead.....if I say yes, I get the same 404 error message.
