Clients can't back up, but Server can, RRS feed

  • Question

  • My clients can no longer backup to the server, but the server can back up to it's own backup drive and the backup service is running.

I've removed and reinstalled the connector software but it errors out at "configuring backup". I've rebooted both clients and the server. The Network Health indicator is green and nothing shows up in the event viewer that mentions back up failures. I can RDP to the Server, I can browse the shares over the network, I can ping it by name with a correct response.

Anyone have this issue or have any other ideas??

  • Client and server backup have nothing to do with each other.

Server backup saves only the content of the shared folders, while client backup saves the entire client into the backup database.

What exactly happens, if you try a manual backup? Can you find an error message in the event log of the client? If so, which? Did it ever work? Are the clients properly shown in the console?

    • Usually failing client backups have one of following reasons:
    • Client side - 3rd party firewall or network misconfiguration blocking communication.
    • VSS issues on the client (often caused by insufficient disk space, 3rd party software - i.e. Symantec Ghost - leaving remains in the registry, failed DLL registrations).
    • Server side - corrupt backup database, caused by a faulty disk or an unexpected crash.
