Defender fails to validate xp64bit - windows installer service not accessible RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Windows defender validation/install fails with win xp 64bit with windows installer version 3.1.4000.3959

Quite sad really, how useless can one company be. Yet again obtuse copy protections prevents paying users actually having a secure working system.

You would think that an update to the WINDOWS INSTALLER of all things could be done without msoft screwing it up!

  • Hi SingedWings,

If I understand your issue, you had a problem installing the Windows Installer 3.1 on XP 64bit

Please see http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803 regarding Windows Installer 3.1 (Below, I have copied the part that relates directly to Installer 3.1on 64bit OSs and highlighed the parts that I felt pertained to your specific situation).

You also mentioned a Validation issue.Windows Genuine Advantage is not compatable with XP 64bit and as such, XP 64bit is not required to be Validated in order to access the Microsoft Download site or any other sites that require WGA validation. Please describe your WGA Validation issue in greater detail.

If your is, in fact, not WGA related, I suggest posting your question in the Windows Forum or Newsgroup

Or go to the Windows Defender support page at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/support/default.mspx

This redistributable component is only for 32-bit operating systems. You cannot install this component on a computer that is running the 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003.

You can install Windows Installer 3.0 redistributable on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and on the release version of Windows Server 2003. Windows Installer 3.1 was included with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

You cannot install this redistributable on the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003 SP1. To update the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003 SP1, or to update the 64-bit editions of Windows XP, download the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 898715 instead of the 893803 (v2) package. For more information about Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) GDR, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

898715 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898715/) An update for Windows Installer 3.1 is available for Windows Server 2003 S about Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) GDR and for the 64-bit editions of Windows XP

    Thank you,
