WHS Can't connect, browse, or backup

Question

Hi Everyone,
Thanks in advance to anyone for their thoughts on how to proceed. Have really liked WHS - even bought a second one - but troubleshooting without a monitor is a new experience!
Have an Acer H340. Single factory hard disk installed. Running about 60% disk space. Been running for a couple of weeks doing backups. No changes, no add-ins, just the automated windows updates. All of a sudden, none of the 6 computers can connect. Can't see the shared folders on the network. Can't remote console. Eventually had to hard crash the server to re-boot it (risky I know but nothing else was working). When the server re-boots WHS toolkit advanced tests all pretty much seem to pass. all the WHS tray icons show network health. As soon as I attempt to connect it times out, sometimes with an error someimes it just hangs at the console screen. At that point all the computers change the tray icon to showing "not connected" to the server. Running the toolkit, most tests fail. The only ones that seem to still work are discover through backup beacon. Also, I always get a ping response.
Been working on it a couple of days now but no progress. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Too bad the H340 doesn't have a monitor port....Tuesday, June 16, 2009 6:04 PM

Final Update - I've submitted a bug report for this error. I suspect it was a microsoft update that caused the problem since this was the generic ACER WHS with no modifications or add ins. Not sure if the bug report through "connect" will get through as it was supposed to give me a second page to attach screen shots but did not.
WHS is a great product, hope the bug report gets through and helps make it better!- Marked as answer by mobeirne Thursday, June 18, 2009 7:20 PM

Your best bet, initially, is going to be to contact Acer. Probably they will want you to try a server recovery; you could do that yourself (following the instructions in your server documentation) if you like.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Tuesday, June 16, 2009 6:54 PMModerator -
Hi Ken,
Thanks for your quick reply! Yes the server restore is always an option. I understand the backup database should be able to be restored with a bit of work.
My concern is how do I find out what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future if I do a server recovery? Does server recovery delete all the logs? The frustrating thing is that the WHS seems to be up when it first boots but connecting seems to hang it.
as the saying goes, those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it... I'd like to learn what's wrong so I don't repeat it. :)

.... update on progress:
I succesfully established a remote desktop connection by attempting to connect just as the WHS was booting. I was able to watch the boot process and it all stopped with two things showing up:
Managed Service Agent encountered a problem and needed to close......Please tell microsoft about this problem
Setup Windows Internet Explorer 8 - the standard installation next or ask me later.
So I've sent the error report and worked through the Internet explorer screens. Things seem to work again. will let run overnight and try to re-boot and see how if the same errors occur.
Seems weird that WHS would hang and even attempt to wait for user interaction to install Internet explorer 8. Any thoughts on why this would happen?Tuesday, June 16, 2009 10:01 PM -
HelloExact same issue here. I suspect one of the more recent updates botched something. I've tried uninistalling all updates back to March and then reinstalling one-by-one, but I can't determine exactly what hoses my connection.I compare it to a balloon being released...all fast (normal) for a couple of minutes and then slows down to nothing. For example, it takes the basic google.com page a muinute or two to load. Text is always fast, it's the image that's slow. Hard to run a server on a modem-like connection!Wednesday, June 17, 2009 11:30 AM
