Office 2003 suddenly "not genuine" - MSDN key compromised ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Similar to other recent posts here, I received a Windows Update within the last week or two for genuine office validation - now I am getting the popup message that my Office 2003 installation is not genuine.  I've been running Office for years no problem.  I used the Magical Jellybean keyfinder to verify that my Office install is using the proper key provided to me via my MSDN subscription.   Interesting if you google the full key number, it's out there in the wild.   Does this mean all us MSDN subscribers are now "not genuine" because somebody released the key to the public?

    I get an "108 Invalid VLK" message in MGADiag.

    Coincidentally, I upgraded my hard drive last week -  ghosted entire contents of the old drive to a larger drive - this wouldn't have anything to do with Office validation though, would it?

    Update: I think the problem is not with Office 2003 but with the Office 2007 Enterprise installation also on this machine.  MGADiag doesn't tell you on screen which version of office is invalid (baaaad design) but if I copy the whole report, I see the following:

    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK
    Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 100 Genuine
    Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003 - 100 Genuine
    Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0
    Signed By: Microsoft
    Office Diagnostics: 77F760FE-153-80070002_7E90FEE8-175-80070002_7E90FEE8-198-80004005_025D1FF3-230-1

    NOTE: IIRC, Office 2007 was downloaded from MSDN and installed with my MSDN provided key, so I don't understand why there's a problem there.

    Screwy thing is I only get the "not genuine" warning when launching the "genuine" Office 2003 products -- I don't get the warning when launching the "invalid" Office 2007 products, heh.

  • Problem solved.  I got a new Office 2007 key via my MSDN account, reactivated Office 2007 with it, and all is well.
