H i was having the same problem on friends pc i had to reset windows update, there are two choices when running this tool, the standard one or agressive mode, i just went for the aggressive mode as i had not been able to even access any updates through pc
or windows site.....all was fixed after tool was run.
re you dont have the discs...i would assume that windows 7 like vista have this built in..i.e. you can do a complete restore to factory settings or roll back to an earlier time when all was working........start..search pane...system restore, choose a different
restore date
to restore to factory settings easiest way to find this if you are unsure how to get around pc, is to go to help and support, search for restore to factory settings, look for Restore your computer from a system image backup, click, you will then be given
options you wish to use, just follow the instructions.....
I would try the fix from microsoft first...
Hope this helps you.
