WHS 2011 Backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've set up the WHS 2011 backup and added 2 drives totaling 3.5TB.  The problem is that WHS doesn't seem to pool this storage but rather wants to back up the server separately on each drive.  This is an issue because I have more than 2TB of data to backup.  With no DE it would be nice to be able to back up a server larger than the constraints of a single drive.

It isn't really clear from your post whether you're talking about client
backups (backing up clients on your network to your server) or server
backups (backing up shared folders on your server) but there are issues
    with both of them.

    1. Client Backups
The issue here is most definitely caused by the removal of DE from WHS
2011. You can certainly create client backups that encompass more disk
space than is contained on any single drive in your WHS 2011 server but
you're going to have to use some sort of RAID or disk spanning solution to
create a drive with an assigned drive letter to pool together those
multiple drives. There have been numerous discussions about possible
    solutions in this forum already.

    2. Server Backups
This is a bit of a different issue and relates more to how WHS 2011
performs server backups and the weird way that it seems to be configured.
First of all, Server Backups in WHS 2011 are based on the built-in Server
Backup feature in Windows Server 2008 R2. This feature, when performing
what is known as an image backup (basically a backup in which a full volume
is selected for backup as opposed to individual files and folders), creates
Virtual Hard Disk files for the backup. These are limited to just under 2
TB in size even if you happen to have a larger storage location.
The weird part about how this is implemented in WHS 2011 is that you don't
seem to be able to select individual files and folders on a volume that is
larger than 2 TB in size, though IMO, you should be able to do so.
The workaround for this one is fairly simple and that is rather than using
the seemingly broken Server Backup through the WHS 2011 Dashboard, use the
builtin Server Backup feature directly. Click Start and then type Backup in
    the Search box.
