Entered wrong product key, entered valid key - service has not started 0x80070426

    Question

  • Somehow I entered the wrong product key a while back when I first got my computer. After noticing this, I went to Control Panel - System and Maintenance - System and tried to change the product key. I received the error code 0x80070426 with the description Service Has Not Been Started. I then went to Services - Software Licensing. My Startup Type is Automatic. I tried to start it by trying all of the options, however it continued to stop.

    I am running Vista 32 bit on a Dell Inspiron 1525.

    I am positive that I am entering my correct product key. Can anyone please offer any advice? I have tried searching countless boards, but my issue seems rather unique.

    This error message means ‘The Software Licensing Service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data’.

     
    System error 57346 has occurred.
    This occurs as a result of massive file corruption. We do not know what the root cause of the corruption is and this can be caused by any situation where files could be corrupted. However, from troubleshooting others that had this issue, the likeliest causes are either Malware Infection or failing Hard Drive. There are a few things you can try to resolve this issue:-
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
    right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type
    CHKDSK C: /R
    and hit the Enter key
    You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

    After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC

    SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
    Click on the Start button
    type in the Search box
    CMD.EXE
    right-click on the only file that is found
    Select Run as Administrator
    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

    run another MGADiag report, and post the results.

  • If Windows Vista was preinstalled by Dell, then you do not need to change the product key. The one currently in use activated the master Windows Vista image installed at the factory.

  • I could be wrong, but I do not think it was preinstallelled. I bought my computer from the Dell website and installed everything myself. The key that is installed now starts with 89578-OEM-.........(unsure if it is safe revealing key).

    Also, I did not mention before, at the System - Windows Activation it says this copy of Windows is not activated. When I try to activate, I get an error saying "A problem occurred when Windows tried to activate, and says the error code again.

  • 89578-OEM-......... is not the product key.  That is the unique Product ID number generated after Windows is installed.

    In order for us to analyze and troubleshoot a non-genuine notification issue you may be experiencing, please download and run the   Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostics Tool.

    After running the tool, click on the Continue button, then click on the Copy button, then Paste the report into your post.  Also, please include a brief question or pertinent background information that would be helpful in our endeavor to assist you.

  • I just ran the tool and when I clicked copy i got the error "Failed to create output files, hr = 0x8007000d. Please contact support. Under the Windows tab inside the Tool, I am able to see the Validation Info. Since I cannot Copy/Paste I will manually insert the results.

    Ignore the error message – that simply means that the tool was unable to save the backup files it created to the disk – it will still paste OK, and we need the full report.

    No need to feel dumb – it confuses everyone :)
    Your installation was done using the Dell Recovery (or original install) system.
    You have a Dell Inspiron 1525 probably manufactured around July 2008 (which means that you probably bought it around July/August)
     
    Your problem is that the Software Licensing System is not running – and it must, if Vista is not to complain.
    Have you been using any form of Registry Cleaner??
    First check that the Service is set to start Automatically – click on Start, in the Search box, type SERVICES.MSC, and hit the Enter key. Accept the UAC prompt, then look in the listing for the Software Licensing Service – right-click on it and select Properties. Make sure that it’s set to Automatic, and click Apply – then try and start the service using the button
    Once that’s properly set, Start the service – how long before it appears to stop again?
    Is there anything in the Event Viewer to indicate why it stopped? – is there an error message?
    Please run the following commands in an Elevated (Admin) Command Prompt Window, and post the results.
    net start slsvc
    sc qc slsvc
    sc queryex slsvc
    sc qprivs slsvc
    sc qsidtype slsvc
    sc sdshow slsvc

    copy and paste the results into your response. (click on the black/white icon top left of the window, click on Edit...>Select All, and hit the Enter key to copy the whole thing to the clipboard, you can then paste it to your response).
    Download, install, update and run a Full System scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org ) – remove everything it finds.

    The first time I clicked the Start button under Software Licensing Serv it stayed on for about a second. I tried it again and got the error - 0xc004e002.

    Malwarebytes found did not find anything.

    Those results are from an ordinary Command prompt, not an Admin one – please use Run as Admin.
    Please also UNDO anything the Registry Booster has done to your system and then uninstall it to remove temptation.

    - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up
    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
    Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

    run another MGADiag report, and post the results.
