OEM key attached to the motherboared RRS feed

  • Question

  • I understand from reading a previous thread that the oem key is perminatly attached to the mother board. Can it be retrieved to activate a formated re-install? the COA sticker on the side of the computer has a small tear in it making 3 of the letter/number code unreadible on a Compaq- XP home machine. I have the original disk  (XP SP1) supplied with the computer. I have tried a couple of keygen programs to retrieve the key, but the ones they come up with won't input as valid and are not even close to what is on the sticker on the side of the machine. What do I do? How do I re-activate this copy?

Yes,  provided that you have the original cd's that came with the computer,  try to use the cd's windows restore process to see if it automatically installs the key first. If that fails then yes, please call Microsoft on how to replace lost, broken, or missing Microsoft software or hardware to replace the product key first.  If you are still having issues activating Windows XP Home,  please re-post.
