What happens to old data when adding a new drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • WHS v1. Question: If I add a new drive does the old data get moved to the new drive or does just new data get located on the new drive as its added?

I ask in case of this scenario. Everything is fine, add new drive, new drive fails right away only after adding a few files, remove bad drive. Is the older data safe? This is all with duplication off for all shares.

My understanding is new data is only added to the drive that has the most space and data is not spread around unless duplication is on, if this was the case only new data on the failed drive would be affected. Looking for confirmation.

    Thanks!

  • Windows Home Server doesn't move files from one drive to another unless it has to, so in general only new data will get placed on a new drive in your storage pool. If a drive fills up completely, however, it may move some data off that drive to another (less full) drive to make room.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
